Poll: Best Big Cities in the World
Thu, 05/20/2004 - 01:49
I love polls, travel, and top ten lists, so here is one that encompasses all three: list your ten favorite BIG CITIES from anywhere in the world. Please note that by big city I mean a large metropolis that really feels like a big city—with charming residential neighborhoods, tall buildings, pedestrians everywhere, diverse social classes, and great public transportation. LA, as a result, isn’t really eligible.
Here are mine:
1) Mexico City
2) New York
3) Sydney
4) Rio de Janeiro
5) Paris
6) Chicago
7) London
8) Berlin
9) Boston
10) Washington, DC
Haven’t been to but am sure I’ll like:
Hong Kong
Rome
Barcelona
Guadalajara
Sao Paulo
Buenos Aires
Istanbul
Jerusalem
Bangkok
Singapore
I like this shit too, because I can be a travel snob and show off that Ive visited around 35 countries!
As for big cities, there is only one in my opinion… and that is Tokyo, the biggest of the big, best of the best.
since there are lists, here are some others that tickled my fancy…
1.5 Osaka
2 London
3 Bangkok
4 Glasgow
5 Hanoi
6 Belgrade
7 Sarajevo
8 Baku
9 Budapest
10 Istanbul
I’m sure Kyoto will be there sooner or later!
Best Cities

I’m sure this will change soon, since I leave for my first trip to Europe in a month.

I think we need to put stipulations on such a list… "BIG" cities should have a population of what? Say 2 million or more??? Maybe 1.5 mill?

5) Jerusalem
6) Dublin
7) Tel Aviv
8) Vienna
9) Vancouver
10) Haifa
There are lots of places I’m sure I’d love if I get there, too.
I can’t believe no one has said my home town of New Orleans. I guess no one has been for Mardi Gras.
I have, and I’ve been 2 other times too…but besides the downtown area, the city’s a dump. sorry but it’s true!
I have, and I’ve been 2 other times too…but besides the downtown area, the city’s a dump. sorry but it’s true!
Actually, I did. But it’s mostly because I have family there and don’t mind the run-down South feel of things. There’s some great things about NO, but I can see how an outsider would see the dirt first and the culture second.
I agree 100% some places are bad and downright trashy. But on the other hand I have yet to go to any major city where is no "bad part of town".
In no particular order, but sort of:
1. New York
2. Dublin
3. Paris
4. London
5. Washington, D.C.
6. San Francisco
7. Nice (except the train station)
8. Prague
9. Florence
10. Salzburg
But I haven’t been to Asia, SA, Aus…I have so much more to see!! AARRGGHH!! Why can’t there be two of me so one can travel all the time!
Oh, and L.A. shouldn’t be eligible anyway, because it blows.
as one who regretably lives here…
In no particular order, except for the first:
LONDON
Rome
Munich
Boston
Paris
Budapest
Split
Riga
and Krakow, if it’s big enough to qualify
In no particular order:
London
Chicago
Montreal
Bangkok
New York
Paris
Amsterdam
Singapore
Vancouver
Seattle
Cities I want to visit:
Rome
San Francisco
Boston
Rio de Janeiro
Istanbul
Moscow
Prague
Cairo
I have been to many big cities in the world, and last month I had the opportunity to visit what became my favorite city in the world, which no one has mentioned yet.
BUENOS AIRES, AR
If you haven’t visited buenos aires you’ll be in for a big surprise. Great neighborhoods, parks, the food, specially the beef is great, and the people are very pretty.
After buenos aires, in no order:
prague
roma
paris
bogota, colombia
1. London
2. San Francisco ( the best city in the states)
3. Edinburgh
4. New York
5. Las Vegas
6. Chicago
7. Amsterdam
8. Venice
9. Rome
10. Paris
Guapito, I haven’t been to Buenos Aires but I’m told it’s a beautiful place and that it is the most European city in South America. Tell us more about Bogota. If I had to guess, I’d say that you’re probably the only EuroTripper to have been there….
Mexico City
Paris
Berlin
Munich
London
Edinburgh
Montreal
San Francisco
Chicago
Budapest
Mexico City
Paris
Berlin
Munich
London
Edinburgh
Montreal
San Francisco
Chicago
Budapest
London
Edinburgh
Stockholm
Auckland
Vienna
Goteborg
Copenhagen
Oslo
Melbourne
Honolulu
Yes, I’m putting on my T-shirt!!! SO WHAT???????!!!!!
I have to say this, Mexico City… Couldn’t resist it…..
And after living in a huge city like Mexico City, I really don’t know what you mean by big city, so I’ll just aim at the darkness. And no, I don’t have 10 cities in my list because I mostly go to little towns, or the cities I’ve been to suck.
Paris
Madrid
Copenhagen (does this qualify?)
Denver (does this qualify?)
I can’t remember Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, so I can’t really say about those ones. The rest I’ll put them later.
1. NYC
2. Venice
3. San Francisco
4. Paris
5. Philidelphia
6. Berlin
7. Shannon (not huge city, but Ireland had to come in somewhere, heh)
8. Las Vegas
9. Chicago
10. Salt Lake City (yeah, I miss home sometimes)
The one’s that I have visited and in no order
1. London
2. New York
3. Stockholm
4. Venice
5. Lisbon
6. Paris
7. Aswan
8. Fez
9. Berlin
10. LA
Well, I haven’t been around the world, but here are my 10, in no order
1) Munich
2) Budapest
3) Chicago
4) Seattle
5) Copenhagen
6) Amsterdam
7) Rome
8) San Francisco
9) Barcelona
10)vancouver
Krakow
Praque
New York
Rome
Paris
In no particular order:
- Washington, DC
– Chicago
– London
– Vienna
– Budapest
– Munich
– Seoul
Some might say Seoul is a total disaster. Actually, it has all the qualifications – charming residential areas, tall buildings, diverse social classes, and great public transportation – and more. It’s just that the way they are all put together is less than graceful.
