Quick descent to using Eurail?
Sat, 03/19/2011 - 15:39
My husband and I are taking a cruise leaving from Rome on Oct. 30th. We’ve decided to fly into Amsterdam and head south for the week prior.
Our schedule is as follows:
Arrive in Netherlands Oct.22- depart Oct 24 (2nights Amsterdam)
Arrive in Berlin 24th- depart Oct. 25 (1 night Berlin)
Arrive Munich 25- depart Oct 27 (2 nights Munich)
Arrive Pordenone, Italy on 27th- depart Oct28 (1 night Pordenone)
Arrive in Rome Oct28- depart for cruise on Oct 30th. (2 nights Rome)
Any suggestions for rail passes or transportation between our destinations?
Any suggestions for must see’s or must do’s?
Please, any and all input appreciated! Thanks so much!
Happy travels!

This itinerary seems kind of silly to me. Why do you want to take these very long train rides only to spend an overnight in some town and then get up the next morning to do it again?
As an example Amsterdam to Berlin and Berlin to Munich are both over 6 hours. You’ll spend most of the day getting to Berlin from Amsterdam, only to have to leave fairly early the next day to get to Munich. Amsterdam to Munich is approximately the same 6 hours. I would do 3 nights in Amsterdam, 3 in Munich and and an absolute minimum of 3 in Rome. If you can’t get at least 3 in Rome then cut one from either Amsterdam or Munich.
Have you looked into cheap flights instead of taking the train? Use www.whichbudget.com to see which lowfare airlines fly which routes and check our “cheap flights” forum for more links, tips and help/
Since you’re committed to exact dates, I probably wouldn’t get a railpass. I would start shopping for tickets on the Netherlands and German national rail system websites 90 days in advance. Buy your tickets in Italy from the kiosk at the train station. Germany (also good for schedules anywhere in Europe): http://reiseauskunft… Netherlands: http://www.ns.nl/cs/… Italy: http://www.ferrovied… — you probably won’t be able to buy tickets on-line from the Italian site with a North American credit card, but you should be able to use your card at the kiosk.
Thank so much.
I think I edited my post after you read it, so you might want to read it again. Also, for your visit to Pordeone, look at taking an overnight train (or flying) to Venice and then taking the 1 1/2 hour train ride to Pordeone.
