Quick question
Fri, 04/22/2005 - 20:15
I wanna start checking airfares for a quick, 4-day weekend trip somewhere (which pretty much puts Europe and Asia out of the question b/c of travel times). I’m torn between Honolulu and Toronto/Niagara Falls. Both are about the same distance, both will cost about the same, and both have opportunities for a red-eye departure or return, thereby giving me an extra day in either place.
I’m traveling solo. Which one would you choose?

Heh. Skip both and come here to Montreal. (Yes, I’m biased).
I’d vote for Toronto/Niagara personally. But then, I’ve never been to Hawaii.
Hello there. I would go to Honolulu…It’s absolutely beautiful there. I don’t recommend doing the "touristy" crap like Luaus as they are expensive and cheesy. The mountains are beautiful and fun to hike on the North side of the island. Ohana Bay is cool to see as well…I think it’s $3.00 to get in and you can snorkel and see some neat fish. The North Shore is a must see and is beautiful, although crowded at times. Will you be renting a car there? There are bus routes, but I am not sure how dependable they are. Kailua is another beautiful beach where you can kayak. There’s also a few waterfalls to hike to…Waimea Falls and there’s another one I can’t remember the name of that is located near the University of Hawaii.
Hope this helps in any way. If you are going in the summer, it is less crowded and the waves are much calmer so you can actually swim on the North Shore.
Ive been to both cities, and montreal too – the thing is they are so different that it kinda depends what you are in the mood for – Toronto is a fun, clean, friendly city, with good bars and feels safe to walk all around. Niagara falls is so so beautiful – more good food and even casinos – a really pretty downtown area along the water.
Hawaii is by far the most beautiful place I have ever been – nothing can compare – Lush green mountains, rainforests, white sandy beaches – touristy or not depending on where you go, the best tropical drinks either alone at a beautiful sunset with music in the backround, or in one of many club areas downtown – to relax, party, hike, bike, swim, or to get the best tan of your life, hawaii is the place to be – I agree with rabbit, go to hanama bay for snorkling with sea turtles, to the leeward coast to swim with dolphins, to the north shore for a more local surfing atmosphere, waimaia falls on the north shore side not only has the beautiful waterfalls but a wonderful park filled with plants from around the world, waikiki for shopping and nightlife- the bus system is cheap and excellent, it goes around the entire island, they have a website (i forget it at the moment), and nothing is too far – i’d say about 2 hours to circle the island aound the coast.. Dont get me wrong, I love toronto, montreal and niagara falls, but hawaii, I could go on and on, It can change your entire mindset!
If you head for Niagara, I’ll buy you a beer there. Still, I’d prob choose Hawaii!
Free beer? I’m in!
Hawaii!!!! It is amazingly beautiful. But… it can be sooo touristy. See how much more it would be to go to Kauai (the most jungly, tropical paradise sort of island). That is me reccomendation. Think about it… warm beaches, sand, beautiful foliage!
I think I’m leaning towards Toronto/Niagara, in part because I live in LA, so there will be a better chance at getting e-fares to Honolulu more frequently (and it can be visited at any time of the year; I don’t want to see Toronto in January, for example).
Coupled with the fact that Hope offered to buy me a beer, that may clinch the deal!
I’ve never been to Niagra Falls and in fact, as corny as it is, it is something I really want to do!
Come join Hope and I, Sailor. I just bought my ticket and will be there the first weekend in June. I hope the weather is nice!
I went reluctantly years ago. I have to admit I was glad I did. The Falls are a very impressive sight, especially from the Canadian side. Of course, me being 17 and sneaking into the bars in Canada was icing on the cake.
Good timing Homeskillet, that’s one weekend I don’t have plans to go away!
Rock on Hope, I’ll be sure to pack my drinkin’ shoes! Should be in Niagara Falls on Sunday, June 5th….
The best way to get in touch with me would be to go to http://www.chatarea…. and register, click on my profile (esperanza79) and use the "e-mail me" function on there to send me an email. That way I don’t have to post it and I can reply directly to the account with which you registered on chatarea.
I just got back yesterday from a 4-day trip to Honolulu flying the red eye there and back and it worked perfectly. I did not miss out on any time on the island.
I would stay away from the touristy stuff in Honolulu and Waikiki, it is way to expensive there, but the rest of the island was quite reasonable.
To get around, I found a rental car through Thrifty for $15 a day and gas was the same price as the mainland. It sure beats the bus system that is slow, and would take about 4 hours to get out to the North Shore.
For good Hawaiian food, at a great price, try Ono Hawaiian Foods at 75 Kapahulu Ave (ph 808-737-2275) The people that work there are great, they will give you a cultural lesson on all the different dishes, we even were given handouts to take with us on the history on some of their dishes. Also if you get a chance go to Leonard’s Bakery for some Malasadas (2 inch fried dough desserts) they make a great breakfast for about 65 cents.
HAPPY TRAVELS!
Hi Hope, I could not find that profile on the ChatArea page. I found one that was very similar and tried to send an email, but I don’t think it went through.
I am registered there under HomeSkillet. Feel free to email me from there.
Thanks!
shoot, I just changed my profile name back to hope1979. I couldn’t find you on backpackers since you don’t post, but log in as homeskillet and here’s the link to my profile through which you can email me:
http://www.chatarea….
If e-mailing fails, send me a "
rivate message" with your email address because I check my mailbox there frequently.
Hope, you’ve got mail (I hope).
Got it, and I sent you an e-mail!
Backatcha….
No brainer.
If you are seriously contemplating Niagra Falls as a destination for anything other than a suicide attempt, or your plan is to swim to Canada to avoid the INS, forget the first sentence…if you haven’t already.
Wait…I take it all back. Toronto is a really enjoyable and lively city.
