The “Stan” countries around the old Silk road intrigue me.  What the hell goes on in these countries? Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan…. so perhaps they haven’t moved into the 21st century, but do many people travel there? Are they worthwhile for travellers?

I’ve personally never been, but I have a friend from Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan). He makes it seem like Kyrgyzstan (I’m sure there is huge variation between the countries) is on par with much of the world when it comes to westernization. Obviously they don’t have a world-class transit system or major banking center, but I think you’d be suprised at how developed the nation is.

Did you see Borat?  Its like that, except instead of lush Romanian mountains its more…sand.
