I am not a RailPass traveler. When possible I fly (EasyJet, RyanAir, etc.). Sometimes I travel by MotorCoach (point to point, no Pass) and I travel some by Rail (also point to point). In Europe, I always try to use the most expedient (and least expensive) mode of transport to get from where I am to where I want to go.

I have some questions to ask of prople who have used RailPasses for their European travel:

1. Did you use all the RailPass travel days you paid for?

2. Did you feel you had to travel using your railpass even though you may have discovered alternative modes of travel were available (i.e., cheap flights or more direct / more frequent bus service)?

3. Did your travel plans (or itinerary) change after any experience with using your RailPass?

4. Did you save any money (travel dollars) using a RailPass in lieu of point-to-point (by the cheapest, most expedient alternative)?

5. When you add in the fees you had to pay over and above the quoted cost of the RailPass itself to get your RailPass; and add in the cost of Reservations and Supplements and Couchettes, etc., are you still convinced it was worth your up-front cash payment? Now that you have done the ‘RailPass’ bit, would you do the same thing next time?

Please forgive me if I appear to be playing ‘Devil’s Advocate’ on the RailPass issue: So many first time Eurotrippers structure their whole itinerary around a RailPass they plan to buy that I feel they should hear pro’s and con’s. It would be nice to have some feedback, favorable or otherwise, from people who have been there, done that.
