Ridesharing and Hitchhiking?
Thu, 03/29/2012 - 03:49
Hi everyone, I’m going to Europe this summer and I’m not buying a Eurail pass because it doesn’t make sense for my route, so I’m wondering about the feasibility of ridesharing or hitchhiking in a few places to ease budget strain. What countries are best and worst to hitchhike in? Can you generally rely on rideshare/hitchhiking to get around somewhat efficiently? And please no rants on hitchhiking dangers, I’m taking that into consideration too. What websites are most commonly used for rideshares/carpooling across Europe? I’ve found a few like Hitchhikers.org, Mitfahrgelegenheit.de, and RoadSharing.com and a few others, has anyone used these sites with success in the past?
A few routes I’m considering trying:
Brussels —> Amsterdam
Berlin —> Wroclaw
Wroclaw —> Prague
Barcelona —> Pamplona
Paris —> London
Anyone have some wise words of wisdom to impart upon my soul?
I am leaving from Vancouver, BC, Canada with $5000 for 43 days

You might also want to join CouchSurfing — I see a lot of people posting requests for rideshares in their forums, plus you can see their profiles with recommendations and reviews.

Hitching doesn’t get much discussion here. Here are some old posts from a couple of years ago that have rideshare links or other information:

I think Let’s Go guidebooks still have information about hitching even though they recommend against it. It’s useful for country/area specific information like hand signals, whether you’re expected to pay, best places to get rides, and other information about the local culture involved.
Thanks for your feedback!
