Hey has anyone been to Romania? I am going there on leave from the army for 2 weeks to get away from Iraq. I heard the average Romanian income is $100 a month, so, does our money go really far over there? I need to know some good places to go and some good places to see.

Thanks,
Tone

The tourist office in downtown Bucharest can arrange for you to stay with a local family for cheap ($5-15). There are now 3 main hostels in Bucharest. There are Villa Helga, Villa Elvis, and “Villa 11.” If you stay in a hostel in this city, I suggest staying at either Helga or Elvis, as they better located than Villa 11.

As an idea about price, in the capital, Bucharest, expect to pay about 10-12 Euro for lodging at a youth hostel and that will usually include them doing your laundry included in that price, and you can get 1-hour massages for 5 Euro at Villa Elvis.

One good sight to see in Bucharest is the Palace of the Parliament. They began building this monster building (over 6000 rooms) in 1984 during the cold war when President Ceausescu was in power and it is still not finished!. The only building in the world that is larger is the Pentagon.

Other than Bucharest, Brasov is good to see and it is only 2 1/2 – 4 hours from Bucharest.

Sighisoara is where many people go for transylvania.

Elvis and his goons are a bunch of pricks who don’t treat their EXCELLENT Roamanian staff well AT ALL.

Fuck Elvis and Nathan and all them really.

Sorry, just something I thought needed adding, I met all them and while I got on with them, have zero respect for any non Romanian affiliated with them.

Yeah, the Romanians can get along with 100 a day, but a tourist never could. You’d have to be born there to understand that.

Lovely country, many beautiful places to see – check out the Favourite places forum for more.

Cheers.

Yes, I live there (here Smile ) in Bucharest.

that’s cool

Indeed, the average income is not too big (about 150 USD / month). Indeed it is one of the cheap countryes of Eastern Europe, so you won’t have that problem.

For accommodation, above the hostels there are some very nice aparts in the center of Bucharest, if you want something more than a hostel, but not the big price of hotels and still all the comfort.

As for the places to see, I’d recommend going into the countryside, see the fortified churches of Transylvania, see Sighisoara Medieval Citadel, the painted Monasteries of Moldova, the City of Brasov or some mountain resorts.

Let me know if I could further help you, I’d be glad to answer any questions you have. Or drop me a note when you arrive in Bucharest , maybe we could meet and hang up for a beer Smile

All best,
