Rome to Athens
Sat, 10/08/2011 - 23:26
I have been able to plan most of my trip to Europe but I have run in to problems trying to figure out the best means of travel between Rome and Athens. I know the cities are somewhat far apart but I absolutely need to have time in Greece! Any tips or information on how to get there from Rome would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I am leaving from Detroit, USA with $4000 for 17 days

Look for a cheap flight. Try www.whichbudget.com to see which low fare airlines fly which routes and check our “cheap flights” forum for more searches, tips and help. A flight will take over five hours when you add time to get to/from airports and check-in time to the actual flight time, but with luck you can find a flight at a time where you won’t kill a whole day. Next best would be train to Bari, overnight ferry to Patra, train or bus to Athens but that’s going to kill the better part of two days.
IMO, it’s not worth the time and $ to get to Greece if you’re only going to end up with a day or two in Athens. Greece needs a week (counting time to get to/from Athens and travel time to/from an island) so you can hit mainland areas outside Athens and at least one island. Longer would be better.
Thanks for the help and the link! It’s been extremely helpful! I have set aside 4 days to actually be in Greece not including travel time thanks to your help!
Best regards, and happy travels!

Skyscanner is also good for tracking down cheapest fares. Looks like Easyjet saves the day on this route.
