from rome to istanbul
Wed, 10/07/2009 - 19:56
I am a first time solo Eurotrip planner. I went to Istanbul last summer and greatly enjoyed the people and the city! I can’t wait to get back, but I was hoping to squeeze it in toward the end of my trip. Does anyone know the best and least expensive way to get to Istanbul from Rome? I was thinking of flying…? Or maybe I should go by rail?? Any help would be awesome.
Also- I was hoping to get some advice on my venture from Barcelona to Rome…after reading all the rail travel horror stories, I fear the Italian railways!! So can I or should I take a ferry rather than the train?
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
I am leaving from Nashville, TN with $4500 for 44 days

Fly — any combination of rail and ferry will take days.
But — IMO, the Italian rail system is absolutely great. There are tons of trains. Some of the local trains are crowded and aren’t the best, but I’ve never been on one that was truly bad. The premier “name” trains are excellent. EurostarItalia and other premier trains are wonderful. I would not hesitate to take the train in Italy — just take normal precautions with your belongings.
Thank you so much, you’ve been a huge help!!

your two options would be to take a 24 hour ferry from barcelona to citavetchia which is right next to rome, or to fly. rail travel will be incredibly expensive and longer than the 24 hours.
i would highly recomend you find a cheap flight on ryanair or vueling or click air. Ryanair has a 5 euro flight from girona, an hour train ride from barcelona, to ciampino airport near rome. You wont end up paying 5 euros after fees but thats how much it is listed for for most days.

There is Balkans between Rome and Istanbul, so forget about even thinking of taking the train. You would have to go through Slovenia-Croatia-Serbia-Bulgaria-Turkey and it would take at least 48 hours, you’d be harrassed 4 times at the borders and you’d pay lot much than even the standard priced air ticket.
If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.
If you only want to search train or bus connection within Czech&Slovakia and/or to neighboring countries, use www.cp.sk or www.idos.cz search engines. For domestic transport, they also show prices.
