rome in march
Tue, 08/10/2010 - 20:04
I was not sure where to post this so I will try here.
We are in Rome for 5 days in march 2011. I notice one of the days (march 20th) there is the Rome Marathon.
Should I avoid the city on this day because of the number of people it can bring? We were going to do a Naples side trip on the 21st, but wondering if I should go on the day of the marathon to avoid the crowd…opinions? Although would be cool to see that while there too!
I am leaving from Canada with $5000 for 38 days
Amsterdam, Hanover, Berlin, Munich, Zürich, Lucerne, Rome, Florence, Paris, Bruges, Lille, London

Marathon day would be a good day for a day trip. Is there a way to find out the route? You’ll obviously want to avoid that for the morning, but the world class runners will be done in 3 hours… If the route goes around the sights of “ancient Rome” it might be a good day to visit the Vatican museums and St. Peters.
I doubt Rome will be any more packed (unless it’s Holy Week) with the Marathon going on in March than it is on a typical day in August.
thanks for your opinion!
I will do the day trip that day. And yes, there is a route posted and it does include ancient Rome. That was going to be our “lazy day” anyway and just kind of strolling around without seeing the major sites…pretty much just “doing as the Romans do”. So we will do that the next day then and do the switch
