Rome where not to go
Tue, 05/10/2005 - 17:57
Each big city has is areas best left to the locals.
Can anyone enlighten me.
Thank you
Near Termini Train Station
One Block in each direction or Roma Termini is seedy…although I feel it looks more seedy than it really is. Go one block or so in either direction, no problems. If you want to stay away from the locals then stay in the tourists areas, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain or the Pantheon. Although, why not share a dinner with the locals?
Want to becareful but not touristy.
Just didn’t want to be in wrong part of town after dark etc.
Traveling alone
It’s just about impossible not to be touristy in Rome. It’s been hosting hordes of tourists for more than two thousand years.
Almost all the hostels are near Termini, except for a couple near the Vatican, and a couple that are too far out to be of much use. The Termini area is not as attractive as the historical center, but it’s cheaper. Just read the reviews of where you’re staying to see if it’s in a dicey part of the Termini area, or a "good" part.
I was in Rome in January 2 blocks from the train station at Hotel Alesandro. It is not a bad area. The area is ok to walk in at night. If you walk around the train station at night you will see lots of homeless sleeping outside. I didnt have any problems though and I walked it alone a couple days in a row. Just be cautious.
Termini area is seedy, but I certainly didn’t feel like it was unsafe. For convenience (virtually all transportation centers around Termini) it’s probably the best place to stay. Since there’s lots of activity 24/7 you’re unlikely to find yourself in the scary situation of being alone, or nearly so, on the street after dark.
Pickpockets in Rome like the ritzier, touristy places — we had our incident at Spanish Steps — which is high fashion shopping comparable to Fifth Ave, NYC
I found the termini area harmless. I walked around even at 1-5am. Some homeless people yeah….but it wasnt scary at all.
Why the need to pick everything apart? Simple question: "Where would you not want to go in Rome?" My simple answer: "the area near Termini". That’s all. There are other parts of Rome that I found more appealing. I was in the Termini area in 1998 and it was a nightmare. I was there last summer and it had cleaned up a lot since then, but it still wasn’t one of my favorite parts of the city! It’s not horrible, it’s not the ghetto by any stretch of the imagination…but it’s not an area of Rome I would be booking towards if I had 3 days there.
hope, so what? we are giving our opinions just like you gave yours.
You think the termini area is a nightmare. I and some others do not. Neither opinion discredits the other.
haha, I don’t think it’s a "nightmare" now. See how nicely things are misread. I said that in 1998 it was! Did you go there back then? I was very impressed last year when I went back and saw how different it was.
I stayed around Termini both times I was in Rome. Not a nightmare the most recent visit, just not the most appealing compared to other parts of Rome. I too walked around in the wee hours of the morning and didn’t feel scared or unsafe and saw the homeless people you’re talking about…it’s part of the scene. Yeah, so what? Big deal, I’m just saying that if your time in Rome is limited, I wouldn’t be running towards the train station or loitering around there.
You are wayyy too defensive about Rome, based not just on this but past convos too
.
I’m not defensive about it at all. Your opinion is yours. The only thing I took issue with was you saying that we were picking things apart…in reference to your post. Not so. You gave your opinion. We gave ours. No one is singling out your take and trying to discredit it. Your take on the termini area is perfectly reasonable and I pretty much agree with it.
you probably don’t know me well enough to gauge my sarcasm
even if someone was singling out my opinion and trying to discredit it, i’d probably welcome it with open arms because things are so boring around here!
huh?
I like Chocomel.
We stayed at The Beehive and it was in a great part of town. Very close to Termini Station. However we were lost one night after doing a daytrip to the Amalfi coast and ended up on the other side of the Termini Train station about 2-3 blocks away on the opposite side than the Beehive is and it was rather scary. We saw several Hookers and drugged out people. I am not that much of a Rome fan though. I like the countryside more.
If your concerned about your safety around certain parts of Rome…then you should avoid the area called Vatican City…depending on the time of year you go this area of Rome can contain a high percentage of pedophiles.
This thread amuses me.
