Rooming in Hostels
Sun, 04/24/2005 - 14:43
I’m a 23-year-old woman who will be backpacking in England, Scotland, and Ireland alone for the first time. I’ve booked all of my hostels except the one in London. Most of the beds that are available are in mixed dorms. I’ve booked a bed in a female dorm for all of my other hostels, and I was wondering about the safety of mixed dorms. I would always rather be in an all-female one, but if the mixed ones are safe enough, I’ll stay there for a few days. Any advice would be really appreciated! (Also, if you know any London hostels you would reccommend, I’d love it!

I never had a problem staying in mixed dorms, and have never heard anyone else did. Sometimes I’m a bit uncomfortable about changing my clothes, but you can always go to the bathroom to do that.
When I have stayed in a mixed dorm I’ve ended up meeting some great guys who were fab to travel with and I wouldn’t have met otherwise. They were always polite about leaving the room when the ladies would change and were more than willing to join the solo women travelers for night time venturing. Chivalry is not dead
But then I could have just gotten lucky shrug
I never had any problems staying in a room with guys. In fact, one of my best hostel experiences ever was when I stayed in an all-guy dorm because no mixed or female dorms were available. The guys were so friendly and polite and all vying for my attention.
I should also mention that I’m married!
I don’t think you being married has any baring on the mixed dorm situation. The guys I met in a mixed dorm were not there just to get a date- I did not find that at any hostel mixed or seperated.
I never had a problem with the guys changing right there in the room, everyone went to the restrooms, showered and changed in there… You will see some boxers, but that is just what guys sleep in. So as long as you are comfortable with seeing other guys in their underwear (but clothed), you should be good.
Just make sure there are seperate bathrooms for guys and girls- I did find one hostel (can’t remember the name) in Dublin that when I went in for my shower it was all girls, came out and there were guys— it was a mixed bathroom, but in the hostel’s defense the shower stalls were behind seperate locked doors and I just did not pay attention to the sign at the door when I walked in
The mixed shower thing was pretty common in a lot of places, I found. Again, always locked individual stalls, but make sure you’re covered up when you emerge from them unless you want a lot of attention… lol.
Mixed dorms are great, with one drawback: as a general rule, guys snore louder and more often than women do. Bring earplugs.
The way I fail to relate to women, I had more fun in mixed dorms. I was the only girl once in a 10 person room, and the guys were all so respecting and worried about my well being it was weird. They worried about their smells and all.
At girl dorms, they are usually little groups of girls who are not into socializing with other girls, only guys.
That’s MY experience.
Agree with above, but I have a choice, I’ll take the all-girl dorm, mostly due to the noise and fart factor. Never had any safety issues in mixed dorms.
I agree with Sailor. I have stayed in mixed dorms and the smell can get quite terrible.
The farting, loud snoring, and stinky feet of the guys were legendary.
But overall, you should be fine.
