Hey, hopelessly addicted canadian hockey fan here, headed to Europe in less than 2 weeks.

I am wondering if anyone knows of any pubs that show NHL hockey in any of the following countries: France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland.(Yeah, I know… as if! Wink

I have already resigned myself to occasional internet checks on my Calgary Flames, but was hoping for a (long-shot) hockey game on TV for a quick "home break" in the midst of my european experience. I know the whole reason for travel is to immerse yourself in another culture, but it’s the playoffs! (I know, I am a sad case – please don’t lecture me!)

Thanks!

hehe, i was just about to post this topic myself!

i’m gonna be in sweden in a few weeks, right in the heat of the playoffs! it sucks, cuz i actually bought my plane tickets while the strike was still going on, so i figured, "ah well, who knows if they’ll ever come back anyway…" so i didn’t think anything of leaving in the middle of may! WHOOPS!

i would assume there would be feeds of alot of the games over in europe, especially so in sports bars. but i think we’ll run into the same problem as they had during the world baseball classic: we’ll be asleep while the games are on! figure most of the flames’ games will start at 10 PM eastern, that’s like 3 AM in most of europe i think. unless they can get some delayed feeds to play the evening after the games, i don’t know if i could justify throwing my sleeping pattern that far out of wack

I am traveling for 51 days
Bath, Haltwhistle, London, Füssen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Speyer, Nördlingen, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Rome, Ostia Antica, Athens, Delphi, Athens

Hey guys – I’m sorry to tell you this but ice hockey (especially foreign) leagues have no following in Europe. I know that in the UK and Ireland there was a high profile movement to establish a hockey infrastructure and team like the London Knights, Belfast Giants, Sheffield Steelers etc. were set up, but the truth is they recieve no TV coverage and so watching games/ matches is restricted to people who pay in to watch.
People here are kind of preoccupied with national sports: rugby, waterpolo, in England, france Malta etc. and here in Ireland: the Gaelic games: Hurling, Camogie and Gaelic football. Football (soccer) is also a European obsession, and wiht the World cup this summer fottball will eb viewed more than ever. I was in Amsterdam at easter and a girl at my hostel was canadian – she kind of talked about ice hockey but noone really understood what she was talking
about.
You may be able to find an american sports bar in one of the larger cities abut i haven’t come across any before. I think your best best would probably be the internet. Sorry!

I have seen something about a bar in the UK somewhere I think that showed hockey games for expats.

I can’t be more help than that unfortunately, but it is worth trying to look for things like that!

I am also Canadian and know that there’s nothing better than a good old NHL hockey game, (especially when the leafs are playing, the cups ours next year!!! ). Anyway, I don’t think you will find any live nhl games there, but I have a solution if you will have access to the internet during games. I don’t know if you are aware, but there is a cool product our there made by sling media called "sling box" which basically takes you cable/satellite signal and sends it through the interet allowing you to watch your home t.v. anywhere in the world with a computer and internet connection. Great for watching your nhl games shown on your local t.v. away from home. No monthly fee’s, just a flat fee of something like 300 bucks for the hardware. My friend bought it, has family in nyc and catches all the leafs games on his laptop when he’s in the States. I am thinking of buying it myself. Hope this might help.
