I’m toying with the possibility of taking a week (during my Thanksgiving holiday) for a short trip to SE Asia. Does it make more sense to do Singapore and peninsular Malaysia duing this trip, or should I go to Thailand instead? I’m concerned that I would be giving Thailand short shrift. What if I wanted to visit Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat instead? Is that a trip in itself?

I guess I’m up for any of the above…pending manageable airfare and preferably a non-stop flight from LAX. Am I on crack to fly this far for only 7 days?

Hm. I think the real trouble is that you can’t count the day you leave or the day you arrive, so that’ll make the trip more like 5 days. Then you may also want to take into account the probable jetlag. I don’t suffer horribly, but it usually takes me a day or two to start sleeping normal hours and function like a normal person. This means that you’ll just have adjusted to new hours when it’s time to go home and probably go to work the next day. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just that maybe somewhere closer to home sounds like it would be easier on you. I heard Angel Falls is lovely around that time of year…

I wish they had the quality of drugs in Japan that apprently they must have in SoCal! ^^

Way too short for any of your ideas, in my never humble opinion. Thailand is absolutely amazing and deserves more than a week, I think the rest of my life is about right.

Cambodia, from what I understand, has a lot more to offer than just PP and Ankor.

Id go with MBEs suggestion on close to home.

Enjoy SEA when you have time for a holiday.

Have a nice trip wherever it is!

I’m sure you’re right, Sick. Thailand sounds amazing, and I probably should save it for a future visit.

If I went to Singapore, what I would—similar to last year’s short-but-doable trip to Hong Kong and Tokyo—is leave Friday night on the redeye that gets into Singapore Sunday morning. Spend, say, Sunday-Wednesday in Singapore, then take the train up to KL Thursday morning and spend Thursday-Sunday in KL. Or something like that. Malaysian Borneo would just have to wait for another trip.

One problem is that many of the "closer-to-home" places that I would LOVE to visit, such as Quebec and Alaska, are better visited in warm weather—which you have year-round in SE Asia. I guess I could go back to Mexico City, where I have friends, but I loved last year’s introduction to Asia and want to see more of that amazing part of the world. I’d love to do another several-month backpack—maybe to East and SE Asia this time—but that’s at least two years away from happening. I s’pose I could go to one of the Hawaiian islands, but at Thanksgiving the fare will be so high that I might as well fly all the way to Asia.

Anyway, that’s my rationale. I like big, modern cities, and that is part of the reason why I am so curious about both Singapore and KL.

Oh, and one more thing, Sick: it’s good to have you back.

I also think it’s a bit far for such a short trip, but businessmen do it all the time.

You could just hang out in Bangkok and surrounds in that time frame. Of course, you’ll likely spend at least a day shopping. A hurried trip to PP and Angkor. If you flew into Singapore and out of KL with an overnight bus in between, you could do it, but it would be pretty rushed. You’re already spending alot of travel time to get there, you don’t want to spend too much of your time in transit once you get there.

In that case go.

Ive never experienced jet lag in my life, its make believe like the tooth fairy or the bible in my opinion.

If the excitement of being in a new place doesn’t make you get over your lethargy you may as well stay home!

I havent been to either but would love to. They both kick ass from what I hear, but I am more interested in KL than Singapore… more down and dirty!

Check Air Asia or some shits like that, they should have a cheap fare between the two.

And thanks Wink

Go for it!

I’ve got a decadent 2 night stay in Beijing in a week. WooHoo!

Not that anyone asked for my 2 cents, but I’ll pitch in anyway….

I loved loved LOVED Singapore, and HIGHLY recommend it. As a woman, I felt a little uncomfortable in KL, the Muslim/Western mix really through me off. But its a nice city, try to get out of the center though, as it can be a little dodgy. Also, double check travel times between cities. The distances may not be that great, and the train may be fast, but a bus is around 12 hours which might throw off your schedule.

As for Beijing, are you planning on going to the Wall? If not, you should definitely try. Best thing about the area, in my opinion. It was like visiting Notre Dame: I thought all the hype around it would make me disappointed by the real thing, but not at all, I was absolutely flabbergasted.

Singapore-KL by bus is not 12 hrs, it’s more like 5 hrs. It’s actually faster than the train…go figure.

I’m in S’pore at the moment and I love it.

luck, does that count transit time at the border? I took an overnight bus when I went and that midnight border crossing seemed like an eternity. Of course, this was close to 10 years ago, so perhaps things have improved.
