Shoe?
Sun, 02/04/2007 - 15:01
Hello there everyone, long time reader, first time poster.
I am planning an ~5 week trip of Eastern Europe (Italy -> Austria -> Prague -> Poland -> Berlin) with my friend next summer, and I’ve gotten so much useful advice from this and other forums!
I’ve been reading a bunch about how to keep your valuables safe; keeping important things split up in your pack, keep your pack/daypack close on the train when sleeping, keep important things safe in a moneybelt when out in less than perfect cities. My question is, is it really important that you keep a moneybelt? I mean, I don’t plan on keeping my passport on me (Keep that safe in the Hostel during the day), and I certainly don’t need to be carrying around €300 in cash, nor do I particularly want to carry around that stuff in my daypack while walking around. What about keeping an ID/Debit Card/~€50 cash in your shoe, either under the sole or against your foot? That is probably the most secure place on your body besides in a money belt, and you don’t have to wear one! It may be a bit inconvenient at times, but you can be absolutely sure that everything is safe. Any comments?

yeah i’m no veteran eurotripper yet but everytime i went backpacking around tokyo or anywhere else is japan (even though its like the safest country in the world) i always kept a bit of money in my shoe just in case. same goes with when i go with friends to the city for a night. its not too much of an inconvience, however i did have to take my shoe off and get some money when i tried to pay for something, which looked a bit odd.
I like to keep $100 under my shoe sole in case my debit card gets lost or something. Be sure to wrap it in plastic because those conditions can deteriorate it. I don’t care for a money belt. I keep my debit card and some money in the front pocket of my jeans.
I think it’s always a good idea to wear a money belt. Helps with pickpockets, you don’t have to take your shoes off to buy lunch, etc. Plus, I ALWAYS carry my passport on me – better to have ID than not.
