should i add italy?
Fri, 01/28/2005 - 10:44
i am going to europe for 3 weeks in june, so far, i am going to be flying into dublin, and flying over to london (through southampton), then train to paris, and amsterdam (haarlem), maybe brussles (anything to see there? it’s on the way). but what i am trying to decide is, i can get a flight to italy (venice or rome probably) for 100 dollars, just me and one of my buddys are going, and im wondering if there is enough to do/see on a budget in italy? rome seems interesting, and venice seems cool to get lost in i guess, but from what info i have researched, it seems to be somewhat $$ down there and more for like married folk on a romance mission… any advise?
p.s. we will be hosteling
Italy is definitely worth a visit. I’ve had an amazing time everytime I’ve been there..and I was on a budget (and not married!)
There are plenty of cool things to do in Rome- there is enough to see to keep u busy for days, and the nights are really lively as well. There are plenty of inexpensive hostels here too. Venice is prob the most unique city you will ever go to, and therefore I wouldn’t miss it. It is fairly cheap to wander around the streets lost during the day and I know of a great place to stay for 13 Euro which is a total blast. (let me know if you want more info).
How much time are you going to be spending in Dublin, London, Amsterdam, and Brussels? Seems like those places will take up your 3 weeks. I’ve visited them all except Dublin. You can easily spend a week in London and Paris each. Depends on your interests. Italy is great, probably my favorie place I’ve traveled to. Just wondering if you’re trying to squeeze in too much.
no
It seems like you have your three weeks filled up. I’d recommend spending more time in less places…I think that would be more enjoyable.
On a side note, though, Italy is my favorite European destination, but save it for the next trip.
oh that is funny that Italy is for just married couple on a romance mission.
If you do not mind flying too much, come to sunny Italy actually today it was snowing but anyway. I also like to relax a bit when I go on holiday, three weeks; you have a lot to see already.
You can always come to Italy when you get married.
LOL
Ditch Brussels and Dublin.
YOU HAVE TO GO TO NAPLES AND POMPEII
how can you do such a brief tour and not go to two of the most important places ???
You will not be dissapointed!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT
Ditch
DUBLIN NO NO NO NO NO NO WAY>>>>>
Ditch Dublin. It’s a alright city, but Italy is just SO awesome. I would say if you were going to Ireland, do a day in Dublin and then go out to the countryside or something. I was just in Venice 2 weeks ago and it was my favorite Italian city. I agree it’s very unique and I realized at the end of my stay there (I know a little too late) that the grocery stores are a great option if you are on a budget. I just thought that since Venice was expensive, everything else would be too. And it’s not just for married folk. My friend and I stayed at a bed and breakfast (it looked like the cheapest option) for $40 a night, so split that btween the both of us, it was a great deal and the place was only 10 minutes away from the train station. In conclusion, dont skip Italy!
Go to Galway or any other wicked place in Ireland rather than Dublin. Thats what the cool kids mean.
I’ve been to most of Europe but have never wanted to go to Italy.
Strange that.
Your plan seems good as it is, try to find some smaller places nearby the major destinations you have listed and you won’t even miss Italy.
I just went to Venice, Florence, and Rome by myself and I’m sure they’re romantic if you want them to be, but I enjoyed those cities for a lot of other reasons – history, art, food, architecture, people. I can’t say whether you have enough time to see a bit of Italy without being rushed – it’s more enjoyable if you have plenty of time for sure.
I am not sure if you will have enough time to make it worth going to Italy, but it is one of my favorite places. I am not a big museum fan but Italy was a great place to walk around and just get lost for the day. I always found nice people and a great time. So if you cant fit Italy into this trip make sure its you next.
Warsaw, Kraków, Lviv, Suceava, Bacău, Focşani, Bucharest, Helsinki
In response to your question about Brussels, yes, there is a lot of stuff to do there. I was there for 5 days and could have stayed longer. Check out the Ancient and Modern museum. It’s one of, if not the best museum I visited when I was in Europe (and this is including the Louvre, Orsey, Centre Pompidou, Van Gogh, ect.) The night life there is really great too, lots of cool clubs as well as a couple of great irish pubs. I went to Florence and would recomend going there if you can. It’s small enough to really see in a couple of days but it won’t bore you. It’s also not a place that you need to be on a honeymoon in order to visit. If you do go make sure you go to a club called Central Park. By far the best and coolest club I’ve ever seen in my life.
I’ve lived in Brussels, and I suggest it’s better to spend three days in Rome than three days in Brussels. Rome has just too much to see and do to skip it over. If you need to, make that the only place to go (if your budget and itinerary are too tight) since you can still just walk around the city, but do try to make it to the Vatican to see the incredible museum there. One word: wow.
G’luck!
N…
1. Do not go to Brussels. I found it fairly dirty and, unfortunately, not too memorable. Personally, I think there are a ton of better cities to visit.
2. You would, without a doubt, regret not doing Italy. Rome is absolutely amazing. Probably the best place I’ve been so far. Gorgeous. If you push yourself (get your butt out the door by 9:00 at least) you can see everything fairly easily in three days. Do not leave without trying gelato (ice-cream)!! We found the best at La Palma which is down the road to the right of McDonalds (stupid arches) across from the Pantheon. Vatican takes almost a full day, but don’t go on Sunday b/c the museum is closed. Other than the Vatican, I thought one of the most amazing things was the Capuchin Crypt (I believe it’s called…) It’s quite morbid b/c it’s art designed out of the bones of 4,000 monks, but absolutely fascinating…and free. Don’t miss it.
Rome’s a great place b/c it’s a quick 2.5 hour train ride or so south to Naples, then 15 min. bus or train to Pompeii. I stayed at the Pop Inn hostel and reccommend it (check out bugeurope.com for reviews). It’s about 50 m from Termini Station so super easy to hop on a train or bus at almost any hour. Plus, it’s literally impossible to lose your way back. (Cheapest wine is at the corner store across from the station entrance.)
I think we payed about 35 or 40 euros for a trip to Pompeii (roundtrip back to Rome). Just to warn you though, they’ve pretty much stripped all the artifacts from the site and put them in a museum in Naples. Don’t bother staying overnight in Naples. I rarely ever feel uncomfortable/unsafe in cities and found this place very dirty and shady. It’s a ton easier to head back to Rome.
Florence is also about 2.5 or 3 hours north from Rome. Get a hostel there, though. I wasn’t able to get there this time but some people I met in Rome emailed and said it was absolutely fantastic.
3. London’s a great city…but it’s not exactly a true culture experience seeing that everything’s in English. The nightlife is great, and if you’re into theatre a show is a must…but I wouldn’t spend a full week there. It’s a good introductory to Europe. Master the subway system (aka "The Tube"
and hit up all the free museums. I stayed at Piccadilly Circus hostel and had a fabulous time. It’s literally about 25 m from Piccadilly Circus (lots of lights, lots of people, lots of bars) and about the same distance to the tube. I don’t think any other hostel can boast such a fantastic location.
I hope this has helped. Have a great time!!
bbano, what is that hostel in venice you were talking about?
Id like to hear about it! thanks
happytravels~ it’s Camping Fusina (www.campingfusina.co…)…I’ve changed my reply as my original apparently sounded like an advertisement
Anyways, this place is a 10 minute ferry ride from Venice and has an amazing bar. That’s it in a nutshell. I recommend it to everybody because I had a great time there.
If ur going to go to Italy be careful on long distance train trips. I have been to Italy and heard a lot of travellers discussing their experiences on the rail and trust me it leaves a lot to be desired. Definitely visit Venice and Rome as they are well worth the expense.
In reply to the above, I stayed at that camping ground (fusina) and while it had a great bar that went off at night, the place was riddled with mosquitos! If camping this becomes a major issue when showering in the open top showers. BTW the above post sounds very much like an advertisement.
Why would I advertise for a place I have no connections with? I was simply stating my great experience there, which is kinda what this board is for. Yes, the mosquitoes were bad, but I guess I’m used to camping, therefore used to mosquitoes. Bring bug spray.
