Skype Abilities
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 15:20
I’m having a big debate about bringing a laptop on my 3 month Europe trip this fall, but I could be convinced not to if Skype is widely available at hostels or internet cafes so I can keep in touch with people back home. Is it common to be downloaded on hostel/cafe computers? I’m hoping to just bring an earpiece with a mic attached to avoid lugging around my laptop for three months and getting it stolen. Any thoughts?
I am leaving from San Francisco, CA USA with $8000 for 92 days

Do you have an unlocked wi-fi phone by chance?
Yes, I just got an unlocked Nokia (I think). I’m planning on buying a sim card when I arrive and then use wi-fi to access Skype to call people. Does that sound doable? Thanks for your help!

Yea that’s what I am doing as well with my nokia E71. I use a free program called “Fring” to call people.

I also use Fring with Skype on my Nokia. Realize, however, that not everywhere has open wifi. Consider a service like Boingo’s $8/month wifi spots.
Also, keep in mind that you will need a new sim for each country — if you want the best call rates. Otherwise, everytime you cross a border, you begin paying roaming charges, and those are steep. A lot of pre-pay sims give you nearly as much credit to start, as it actually costs to buy it, so you really don’t “lose” much if any in the set-up. Lebara is a good pre-pay in several countries, but it also is country-specific on rates.
