So the tickets are purchased and the list of finalist cities/countries has been chosen…The only problem is that aside from a few cities, I cant decide which cities I should cut form the final itinerary! I’ll be landing in London on May 28 and returning from Paris on June 30th….
And the finalists are: London, Paris, Brugges, Amsterdam, Berlin, Krakow, Erfurt(family there), Prague, Munich, Rome, Venice, Cinque Terre, Madrid, Sevilla
For the amount of time that I will be there, I know that the list is too packed, but I just can’t narrow the list down further. Each day, I decide that a different city/cities should go, which is really getting me nowhere in regards to making some final plans.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what places they feel are must see cities? Im also open to suggestions as to cities that I have completely overlooked. Also, if anyone could suggest how long I may want to stay in each city, that may be of some use too!
Ive been on a few shorter trips, so I feel comfortable with London, Paris, and Amsterdam (My girlfriend has never been though), but everything else is going to be a new experience for me. Any and all tips would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!!!

I would cut a whole country. Spain or Italy seem to be prime choices as they are the furthest out on your itinerary.

Get rid of Krakow, and Brugges. France, Germany, Italy, and Spain are more than enough for 1 month. Split the days equally for each country, than go from there. You can give more days to countries you are more interested in.

Sevilla is way far from Paris if you have to make it back there by the end of your trip.

delfrio’s advice is grouse.

Sevilla is probably the one city that I was leaning towards cutting out….as far as krakow, I really just wanted to do a two day trip, one day at aucshwitz(sp?) and one day to discover Krakow. I will definitely keep that in mind though…keep all the great advice coming though!!!

Following Del Frio’s advice, if you go to Spain, try to include Portugal, if you’re in Italy, try to add Austria, wherever you go, make it worth it.

The problem is we want to eat the world in one bite, and you can always come back, just stick to a region if your time is so limited.

Looking at it a little closely, you are only visiting one or two cities per country. Trains take up time you could use for other things. After many mistakes on my past trip, I would suggest 2 or 3 countries giving a chance to other cities asides from the main ones. For example: I’d ditch Italy (it’s beautiful but out of the way), Spain (worth going, but again too far), and explore a little bit more of the UK, go to London, Manchester (great day trips from there), up into Scotland (awesome!!!), etc. If you go to Poland, then you might as well go to other eastern countries that are close by.

I know there’s places that seem like a must-be, and there’s places you don’t even know about that will prove a great experience, and Italy and Spain can motivate you for your next trip.

As long as you don’t furberate my grouse I will meet you in Krakow.

ET FYI (neat sickboy fact!): the first time I had heard of Krakow was from a Calvin and Hobbes comic.

I love Spain, so I’m going to be biased and say keep that in. Who cares if it’s out of the way. You can easily get to Madrid with super cheap flight from easyjet so that will save you the train time (it will probably be cheaper that taking the train anyways). I’ve recommended this before…I’d say go to Madrid and then take the bus to Barcelona (take the night bus, it’s 20 euros and you save hostel money) then from Barcelona you can easily get a flight from Barcelona to Rome with Ryanair then work your way up from Italy. Spain is going to be beautiful during the late spring and probably the best weather youll get too out of all the countries. Barcelona was about 70 degrees in when I went earlier this month! Maybe cut out Brugges and Germany? Prague is SO beautiful that I am going to say keep it in there. Spend like 2 days in London, the other cities on your list will be way better (in my opinion).

Since you have already been to London, Paris, and Amsterdam, I would make sure to visit Venice, Rome, Barcelona, and anywhere in Swizerland (Interlaken is great!) If you prefer to stick to only trains, then I would choose Italy, Switzerland, and maybe southern France for this trip. I enjoyed these places the most, but it all depends on what you like.

THanks for all the hints! SO Ive noticed myself that Ive chosen a lot of big cities, so what small cities would you guy consider going to? I think that Ive narrowed the list down to the UK, France, the Netherlands, Germany, czech republic, Switzerland and Italy. Looking at a map with the rail pass, I think These would work nicely and avoid wasting so much time on the trains without stopping and enjoying some places.

Since you’re flying into/out of London and Paris, and have family in Erfurt, try to build an itinerary around those 3 cities. You could take the Eurostar from London to Brussels, then go to Brugge and perhaps some other places in Belgium, then head to Amsterdam. You’ll have to change trains in Antwerp for that, so stopping there for a day, and perhaps in Utrecht as well, would make sense. From Amsterdam continue to Berlin and Erfurt. If you have time, Prague or Krakow are easy to reach from Berlin. You could also add Leipzig (from where you could continue to Regensburg and Munich, or Prague, or Poland). On your way from Germany to Krakow you could stop in Wroclaw, and perhaps visit some smaller towns (e.g. Jelenia Gora) from there if you feel you have time left. Then it’s probably easiest/cheapest to fly back to Paris, check www.whichbudget.com for budget airlines on different routes.

I am the girlfriend that Jomegz keeps referring to…
Thanks so much for all your advice. I personally was wondering if anyone had more input on where to go in Switzerland. This country is the most recent addition to our trip, therefore we haven’t really had as much time to research it as we have for our other choices. If anyone had anymore suggestions on what to see/how much time to spend in this country, I would really appreciate it!

I’ve only been to Interlaken and Zurich in Swizerland so I probably won’t be very helpful. However, I can recommend going to Interlaken for sure..it’s a must see!! The Funny Farm is a great hostel to stay at while there and be sure to do some of the extreme sports Smile Zurich wasn’t all that appealing to me, but maybe I was just cranky because it was the last stop on our trip. Who knows.

So grouse is negative, and belittling at that? From the context I would’ve assumed it was positive, and it certainly doesn’t seem like delfrio was offended by it either.

At the risk of "belittling" you: get a life, for fucks sake!

Sorry, I have never been to Switserland, though a friend of mine goes to Zermatt twice a year (hiking in summer, skiing in winter) so that must be a nice place.

Thanks Kar!

Funny how you always pull out the "keyboard tough guy shit", then do the same thing luis. Don’t you understand the irony and hypocrisy? Why is it okay for you to call people down on it and then do it yourself? Maybe I am proving your point, but you jumped on me for erroneous reasons, making yourself look like a fool.

I could explain what the word grouse means in slang but why bother with your judgemental arse? Even if I did, there is no betting you would understand it, like your failure to understand my post that made you launch into keyboard warrior mode. Funny seraph could understand it, and English isn’t her first language Wink

I’m cool with ‘frio and I complimented him on good advice.

I guess when learning foreign languages you also learn to guess the meaning of words from their context. And it was pretty obvious here, as delfrio gave good advice and you agreed with it in the first line of your post.

So I am now considering Interlaken into the itinerary, but everything seems so expensive! Does anyone have a clue as to how much activities like skydiving, bungee jumping, etc, etc, etc, costs? Also, what other things might I be able to look forward to on a tight budget (aside from the scenery)? I probably would want to stay for two days, so I am open to all suggestions! How does Interlaken compare to other cities as far as budget travelling is concerned? Thanks for any tips!

so here is the revised itinerary…
land in London (3)
brugge (1)
amsterdam (3)
Berlin (2)
Prague and Krakow (4)
Erfurt (2)
Interlaken (1)
Rome (3)
Cinque Terre (2)
Paris (4)
If my math is right, this gives me like five days (plus or minus a few) for added time/travelling…any suggestions on how to spend this time?
Should I focus on the cities I have, or is there a city, on the route Ive chosen, that I should add?
any tip will help, Im planning on buying my tickets this week, so Id like to have a tentative idea of what I want to do before hand….
thanks for any advice!

I think you (and by "you", I mean "we&quotWink should spend more than two days in Erfurt, seeing that you will have free room, board, alcohol, and entertainment there. To me, all this free nonsense seems like a plus.
I also think you (Well, at least I) could do Berlin and Krakow each in a day, leaving 3 whole days for lovely Prague.
