Hi, I am trying to put an itinerary for a trip to europe around September 2010 and it will be around 12 to 15 day trip.
So far I have made a list of cities that I want to visit, they are in order: Dublin – London – Amsterdam – Venice – Rome – Paris – Dublin.
I hope I can get a lot of good advice on transportation (airplane or train), hotels/hostels and what sites do I need to visit at each one of the cities and maybe how many days do I need to stay in each cities.
What will be the best eurail pass to purchase considering the countries that I wanted to visit and the length of the trip.
Thank you so much

A few things in no particular order:
1) There’s no way I’d try all that in 12 days, so make sure you try for 15 days.

2)Consider a multi-city plane ticket that would allow you to fly into one city and home from another.

3) The order you’ve chosen will waste time and make you sit through some very long, complicated train trips. Try Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Venice, Rome (then back to Dublin if necessary).

4) A railpass probably isn’t too good for this trip. It won’t help for Dublin-London, London-Amsterdam, and won’t save much if anything compared to point to point tickets for your other trips.

This is probably true, especially since it makes sense to fly for the one really long leg. However, I would use the railsaver tool (in the Trip Planner and under the “bookings” tab) to be sure.

so it’s better to fly from dublin to london and london to amsterdam?
Any suggestion on what website I can use to find a reasonable domestic flight tickets?
and if I want to spend 15 days for the whole trip, do you have any suggestions on how many days should i stay in each city and in what order? I can probably scratch Venice off the list if it’s too ambitious for 15 day trip.

Yes, fly from Dublin to London. However, I’d probably do train from London to Amsterdam. You take the Eurostar to Brussels and then change trains to head to Amsterdam. I think it’s about five hours.

I agree.

Look for an open jaw flight to save the time and cost of getting back to Dublin.
My candidate for the city to cut would be Dublin. Save that for your next trip when you have some time to enjoy Ireland. Ireland is great, but you don’t have time to see it. Dublin is, IMO, “just another city.”

if i cut dublin from my list, how many days should I stay in each city considering it is a 15 day trip (London, Amsterdam, Paris, Venice and Rome) in the order that Augustin25 suggested.
I just want to be able to put an itinerary together and really need help with this so I can check on prices.

Depends on where you might want to do daytrips from, but I think London and Paris particularly deserve about 4 days, Rome 3, Amsterdam 2-3, Venice 1-2. That would include travel (most of these, the travel time between them isn’t bad… it’s like 4.5 hrs from London to Amsterdam, 3.5 Ams-Paris, and 3.5-4 for Venice-Rome). You might look into a flight or night train for Paris-Venice.

I agree. An open jaw flight (into London or Paris and out of Rome, for example) would make this workable. I think Rome’s a good candidate for 4 days, too, but you could “get by with” 3 days in Rome, Paris or London if you wanted to add a day somewhere else. Venice is a good candidate for a 1 night stay if you arrive early in the day, spend that day and night and the next entire day. Then take a late evening flight or overnight train to your next destination.

I think so far I have the dates figured out on when and how long I would like to be in each city (Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Rome). Can you please give me an idea on where will be the best area to stay in each city so I can figure out on what area should I look for a hotel or hostel and a list of things that I definitely have to do in each city. Thanks.

I’ve been to Rome once (for 3 days) and stayed at a great hotel called Best Western Hotel President on Via Emanuele Filiberto, just steps away from the Colosseum. The hotel is rather expensive but it has an excelent location. I don’t know much about hostels in Rome so I can’t help you out there. But here’s what you have to do while in Rome:

Colosseum
Pantheon
Trevi Fountain
Spanish Steps
Piazza Navona
Piazza Venezia (just the view from the street amazes me)
Vatican City (make sure you’re dressed appropriately)
Be sure to have some pizza, pasta, and gelato!

If you want a discount, check out the Roma Pass (20 EUR). It’s good for 3 days and gives you discounts to various attractions and free public transport within the city, if I’m correct.

Last year I went on a Europe trip as well and stayed in venice for four days. The city’s wonderful!!!
We stayed at Hotel Torino, near Saint Mark Square…the staff is very friendly and helpful with suggestions Smile http://www.hoteltori…
The location, believe me, it’s the plus, it’s in the city centre, great for the nightlife too (the public boat transportation doesn’t work all night long, so staying in the city centre is useful… )
