surfing and snowboarding in europe
Wed, 07/29/2009 - 18:04
Hello!
I am going to be studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain this fall. I am interested in surfing sometime in early October. I’ve heard San Sebastian is a good spot and also Biarritz, France. Which one is better? Are there places to rent surfboards and how much are they? Is there a website I can look at?
Also, I was planning on snowboarding. Where in Europe would be best? I was thinking Switzerland or Norway…how much is it to rent a snowboard? What month would be best?
Alexis, you can snowboard anywhere where you can ski, and that includes locations in Spain as well, like the Pyrenees or Sierra Nevada. From Barcelona, the Pyrenees can be a weekend excursion. And, of course, plenty of other places in Europe; anywhere where the topography allows it. Here’s a list off the top of my head: Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, and Spain.
Biarritz vs San Sebastián: Why not check out both? They’re not far from each other.
Yes, you should be able to find a shop where you can rent a surfboard.

I’m planning on going to Norway or France to go snowboarding. What date is snowboarding season? I was planning on going early november.
early november might be too early depending on the location. if you are on a budget, I would recommend the pyrenees in france for a cheaper destination. The alps in France can be very expensive, and I can imagine Norway being quite expensive too although I do not know this from experience. I would plan to go to Bayonne in france next year early august as well for les fetes de bayonne, although I realize this is completly off topic. If you are looking for a mayhem week though, the first week of august is crazy at Bayonne (right next to Biarritz).
