In your opinion which would be better to take on a trip a swiss army knife or a leatherman tool? I can put it into checked in lugguage, can’t I ?? Does anyone know if they are illegal in any European countries??

I carried a Leatherman and packed it into my checked luggage and it was not problem at all and was very convenient to have. Just make sure that you remember that you are carrying it when you go certain places. For example I showed up at Olympic Stadium in Munich and bought tickets for a FC Bayern game with it strapped to my belt.. As we all know security is very tight at these kind of events. I was patted down from head to toe and my daypack was searched thoroughly, but not thoroughly enough. There was a small pocket inside that I hid the Leatherman in and put my two camera’s on top. It was a tight fit and the woman thankfully didn’t move the camera’s. I got lucky but my stupidity almost cost me one of life’s necessities. I am just sneaky I guess!

Well U had to remember both are fine tools, and not just things to show off. If U have one or the other, just use it…Both are great, but the leatherman has pliers and a longer blade. If U think U’ll need them, go for it, otherwise I’d stick with the smaller swiss army. Oh, by the way, I prefer Wenger than Victorinox as it’s even a little smaller and has lockable blades. My old workhorse has been with me for 7 years and has become part of my body…I never leave home without it and many times has saved my a$$ off… that’s what they’re for rite???

I carry a swiss army knife, but you have to do a lot of "remembering" of where the knife is. You want it with you on a long train ride, but then have to remember to put it back in the checked luggage when you fly. I put mine in my purse on the train to Kiev — a long train ride when we carried stuff for lunch. I forgot that the reason we were going to Kiev was to visit the cultural attachee at the US embassy. Embassy guards DO NOT like to see swiss army knives.

I decided to go w/ a Sheffield Mfg 14 in 1 stainless steel multipurpose tool. It actually came in a gift set so I also got a 14 in 1 pocket knife , and an aluminum carrying case . All for less than $10 at a local home center . Hopefully it will work well for me

Wow !!! I’m impressed, before this, it went to 5 posts in 2 days !!! not bad at all … By the way, anyone else had any experiences of funny things with swiss army knives??? Mine is that once I attended to a metal concert, but forgot I had it on my belt. I noticed I was carring it when I was on line and about 10 meters before to get in , so I had to rip my pocket and slip my knife all the way down until it reached my boot, and so I went in, and btw it was a real pain, trying to walk with somehing inside by boots…
