My first time to Europe and here’s a tentative plan:
London
1 July 13 – Fly from Toronto to UK (Land either Gatwick or Stansted)
2 July 14 - London
3 July 15 - London
4 July 16 - London
France
5 July 17 - Paris
6 July 18 - Paris
7 July 19 - Paris
8 July 20 - Marseilles or Monaco (1 only)
9 July 21 - Marseilles or Monaco (stay the same city as above)
Italy
10 July 22 – Rome
11 July 23 – Rome
12 July 24 – Rome
13 July 25 – Florence/Pisa
14 July 26 – Venice
Greece
15 July 26 – Athens
16 July 27 – Athens
17 July 28 – Athens
18 July 29 – Mykonos
19 July 30 – Santorini

Have 4-6 days left before flight back to Canada from London. Can be from anytime in August 3,4 or 5. Will allocated those extra days in the cities above.

—————————————————————————————-

Q1. Should I fly to Gatwick or to Stansted from Toronto? It’s about $25CAD cheaper if I fly to Stansted, but I’m wondering what’s the best economical and efficient way to get from either Gatwick or Stansted to London, UK.

Q2. I’m planning to use Ryanair or Easyjet to get from country to country. I know at times, these airflights may not be available and I will have to take a bus or train. Should I invest on a EuroRail pass? Or buy my trip tickets when I’m there?

Many Thanks!

1. I think you will find Gatwick easier.
2. I would look at taking the train for most of this trip, but probably not buy a railpass. You need to look for cheap flights on your specific days and then decide. I doubt a railpass will pay unless you end up taking the train between Paris and Marseilles and/or Marseilles and Rome. Use www.railsaver.com to help you decide which, if any railpass, is the best deal.

The train is faster between London and Paris. Paris to Marseilles is about a toss-up for train vs. plane in terms of time. I’d take whichever is cheaper. For Marseilles to Rome, I’d probably fly unless I couldn’t find a cheap flight in which case I’d take an overnight train. Train is much preferable for getting around Italy. I’d then try to fly to Greece. You’ll probably have to fly to the Greek islands; I doubt you can make it to both Santorini and Mykonos in two days by ferry — it’ll be a stretch flying.

I didn’t think there were flights direct from Toronto to Stanstead. But, if there is, I don’t think it makes any difference. Central London is conected to either airport by the Express train.

Personally, i’ve only used Gatwick though. But there about the same price.

If you plan on flying most of the time, I doubt a railpass would ever be the cheapest option. P2P tickets would be likely the best, but it does depend on your itinerary.
