I went to Europe for 2 months and didn’t get anything stolen from me. However, I do know alot of people who got alot of things stolen.. from clothing, to mp3 players, money, towels, bathroom supplies etc. Backpackers are desperate. We would hear people joke about robbing our annoying bunk mates. You have to be carefull. Keep an eye on what you leave where and always know how much money you have. Many hostels have lockers so you don’t have to worry, but it’s hard to always have all of your things put away all of the time.
Backpackers recycle their clothes so often it is VERY tempting to easily get some new ones. Be aware that even your ‘friends’ can steal from you. It’s everyone for themselves!

lol

I just know people who got their stuff stolen, and when you don’t have much with you.. getting something taken is a big deal. You might as well go with eyes on the back of your head rather than waiting for something to cause you to be that way.

I would usually just collect all of my loose end things from around the room and stuff them in my bag, zip it up and slide it under my bed for the day.. anything else I would put under my pillow and pull my bedsheets way up.

Most people are not confident steelers. they’re more likely to grab your stuff on their last day (on their way out), or if they know that you don’t keep an eye on your stuff. Most people don’t want to make a huge effort to go through your things, they’ll take whats easiest to grab because there is less risk.

You won’t have any problems as long as you are smart about it. No one will want to steal your dirty clothes etc, but leave valuables out on your bed and your just asking for it.

I went to Europe for a month and had no problems. I locked my valuables up when there was a safe or something available, and left everything else out. Really, no one will want your dirty stuff.

I beg to differ that no one will steal your dirty clothes. Maybe if you have shitty style no one will steal your clothes..

Well, I left stuff out all the time for a month and nothing was stolen.

Guess it depends on your roomates, or the hostel.

absolutely, there are always people you have to watch out for though, and you can’t always point them out in a crowd.

The main places you need to worry about getting things stolen from are not the hostels, they are on and in the stations of the trains and subways. Yes be careful at the hostels because some theft does occur there, but for the most part they are safe and filled with fellow travellers who might even look out for your things, just don’t be stupid and make it easy to steal something valuable. On the trains and subways, however, are many, many professional pickpockets who go there every day to steal from tourists. They know what they are doing, and you may not even know they are targeting you. You will be pushed up against people getting on and off the trains and that makes it especially hard to notice someone ripping you off. Yes, you need a moneybelt. You can lock it up in the hostel safe if you want, but use it for between city travel at least, and put a small combination lock on the zippers of your bag. I even took a bike lock and locked my pack to the luggage racks on long train rides so I could go to sleep and not worry about it.

I was in europe for a month last year and i never got anything stolen. like everyone else said though, don’t leave things out. that’s just asking for trouble. when you’re using public transportation, just be aware of your surroundings and keep your bag on your lap or in your arms. those necklace things don’t sound like such a bad idea though. i think i might get one when i go this summer.
