Are you planning to stay in Athens the entire 6 weeks or so? If you’re planning to include other countries in your trip, then look for multi-city flights. You could go YYZ>ATH and return from LON>YYZ for example. These often do not cost much, if any, more than a regular round-trip, but they save you loads of backtrack time and expenses. Kayak, Cfares, and FlightNetwork have very good multi-city flight searches.

$971 seems very good for this round-trip, but I would also look at multi-city prices before purchasing. Look closely at who is operating the flights. Delta and KLM codeshare on a lot of transatlantic flights, so if you will actually be flying KLM, then that is very much worth an extra $11 in this case; if the flights are actually operated by Delta, then just book the cheaper price. Airtransat.ca flexible search found Toronto-Manchester 30 May, Athens-Toronto 9 July for $704 CDN total — if you wanted to visit the UK on this trip, anyway, then starting out in Manchester might save you about $270 on the transatlantic airfare in this case.

Hmmm that’s interesting. We are going to be in Greece for the whole trip so we don’t need to stay in Manchester at all. But I did look into a one way to greece after arriving in Manchester and found a ticket at ryan air for 263 which would save me in total 60$. I’ll talk to my buddy and see if it’s worth it. $60 savings probably isn’t worth the hassles and risk of mis-connection. Ryanair don’t serve Athens; however, Easyjet does, and from Manchester.

Ryanair does serve Volos with flights from Hahn Germany, and Bergamo, Italy. Around your dates from HHN, for example, for only $62+their annoying fees. Of course this would require a good offer to Frankfurt, and bus transfer between airports (which I have done! it’s very easy) to make this work. I didn’t check Milan prices for similar trip using Ryanair and Bergamo airport (since there aren’t transatlantic flights arriving at Hahn or Bergamo, you’d have to use FRA or MIL, respectively).
