I’m travelling around Europe for 4 months this summer. I’m wanting to know some of the details about renting lockers at train stations. What is the typical rate to rent lockers and what does that get you? I’m looking at visiting France, Spain, Morocco, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Greece, Holland, Poland, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine and Russia. I was thinking I’d like to have a backpack which I’ll take with me to all the different cities and a suitcase which I can leave in a locker at different train stations so I can store souveniers and various other items. How long can you leave a bag in a locker and how does this effect the cost?

Everything about this varies with the place. Terrorism/security concerns frequently change the situation at a specific place. Not all stations have lockers. Some have "left luggage" rooms. There may be places where you can store something for 30 days, but I would not count on longer than 2 weeks and some places have 3 day limits. I’d be concerned about the safety of my stuff in a left luggage room in some of these countries. There are scammers who try to look like the official left luggage person….

Rate varies significantly, but I’d count on 3 euros per bag per day. Also, the big lockers are the most popular and are often taken.

While you didn’t mention UK, this link may give you an idea of the situation in Western Europe.

How long can I leave my bag in lockers though and what do they cost? If I find a station w/ a locker that fits my bag I’ll leave it there and return periodically. Suggestions of stations w/ good lockers would be appreciated. Thanks

It all depends on what country-city you’re visiting. Honestly I don’t remember very well, some places don’t even have lockers for security reasons and some places you can leave your bag for 30 days as oldlady mentioned, and some places you can leave your things 24 hours.

I don’t remember as my trip was not yesterday, and I didn’t make much use of the lockers. I can understand your idea of not carrying around stuff you won’t be needing specifically for your trip, and it sounds brilliant, but I think it will be a bit expensive. When I was there, the average was 5-7 euros per day, some charged for 12 hours though, and some went all the way to 9 euros if my memory doesn’t betray me. This is 1/3 of what one normally pays for a hostel.

On the other hand, are you willing to go everyday to the train station to pay for another day?

No, I wouldn’t be willing to go back and forth to the train station on a regular basis. Someone told me that at some stations you can rent lockers for extended periods and it’s not expensive. Like I said, if I can find a just a couple places which can accomidate my needs then I’m good. I’m getting a 3 month eurail pass so getting to my stuff won’t be a problem. If you can think of any place that’s would work well for me that’s in the countries I’ve listed then just tell me. I don’t think I’ll want to take it w/ me through Moldova though b/c I’ll have to go through Transnistria on my way to Odessa. I could see it being a hastle there.

I really think this strategy will prove difficult.

Any information anyone knows about lockers would be appreciated. I’ll decide if I think it’ll be to difficult based upon the information I collect.

As someone said, it very much depends on the train station as far as thier policies for storing luggage, and their rates. For example, in paris, only 2 of the 6 train stations allowed luggage storage. The size locker I used cost me 4 euros for one use. (you had to pay 4 euros everytime you wanted to relock the locker) and the maximum storrage length was something like 3 days.
In venice, it was 3.80 for the first 5 hours, 60 cents for every hour following, and then 20 cents an hour after 12 hours, with a maximum storage time of 5 days. They also didn’t have lockers, there were simply men who took your bag from you, and stored it on a numbered rack, and provided you with a receipt for when you reclaimed your bag.

So if you’re genuinely interested, I would figure out what train stations you’ll be traveling through, and check thier websites about thier rates and policies with luggage storrage. Some of them won’t store luggage at all for saftey reasons, so it varies drastically from station to station.

A possibly cheaper option for your souviniers or aquired items, is to simply mail them home at the rate you’ll be paying to leave them in lockers and move them from locker to locker.
