Train in the UK for one Week
Tue, 02/19/2008 - 17:50
Alright so we fly into Heathrow on the 27th of april and have about a week before having to be in Paris to meet up with some people, the plan is to get out of London right away and head to York then up to Edinburgh, hopefully touring hadrians wall a little bit, and possibly up to aberdeen where we might be able to meet up with some people.
I am looking for sites to get UK rail information, are there passes, how do the point to point tickets work (Ex. could you buy one from York to Edinburgh and get off somewhere in the middle for a while to check out a place then get back on the next train?)
Any help would be useful, thank you in advance
There are Britrail passes. You can read about them by clicking on “rail” at the top of the page.
Most point to point tickets In Europe allow you to break your journey for up to 48 hours. However, I’m not sure that’s the case in UK — particularly with some of the lower priced specials and advanced purchase tickets. At little time poking around at http://nationalrail…. should help you figure out all about point to point tickets in UK — just be aware that regular tickets can be expensive in UK. Advanced purchase can save a lot of money.
You might also look at the bus. That can be a good deal in UK http://www.nationale…

Advance purchase point to point and long-range bus routes are probably your best bet. This site seems to have some good advice for getting best UK rail prices: http://www.moneysavi…
you could check out this spit ticketing guide? sounds like it might be useful if your stopping at different places along the way, might only be a good idea tho if you have a final destination, other than that you could get a rail card and save 1/3
