Transportation(roundtrip) from Groningen, Netherlands to Grenoble, France
Mon, 03/31/2008 - 14:00
I will be in Europe this summer for 1 month (exchanging houses). My base will be just outside of Groningen in the Netherlands. I need opinions on whether to take a train to Grenoble or should I drive. The train route seems to go from Groningen to Amsterdam; to Paris; and then Grenoble. It is pricey. The drive would be approximately 10 or 11 hours—not that much longer than the train. Any suggestions appreciated.
The train involves getting from Paris Nord station to Paris Lyon station, or making even more connections by going through Brussels or Lille, so it’s a pretty ugly train trip that shoots a whole day. I’d drive (and I normally recommend the train for city to city travel).
Renting a car with insurance, taxes and fees for more than one country plus fuel, parking and tolls will probably cost more than the train unless 3 of you are traveling together.
