would it be cheaper if i arrive in one city and depart in another, or would a roundtrip ticket from the same location be the smarter choice?

It depends. A straight roundtrip ticket will be cheaper, but sometimes the extra cost is to fly into one cty and out of another (called an open jaw) is nit that much. Plus, with a round trip ticket you’ll have to travel back to the city you flew in to, so add in that cost when trying to figure out what will be cheaper.
