If you’re flying into Pisa Airport (eg, from London Stansted on Ryanair), the trains from Pisa airport are infrequent (only every 1 to 2 hours). But the airport is only a few miles from the center of Pisa, and you can also take the (much more frequent) city bus:to Pisa’s main railway station:
Walk out of the Pisa airport terminal and turn LEFT to the bus shelter (on the far side of the car parking area). From the bus shelter, take bus number 3 (bus schedule posted at the bus stop) – this bus stops at the main Pisa railway station on its way to downtown Pisa. (Only about a 10-minute ride from the airport.). There are many more train departures from Pisa Centrale railway station than from Pisa Airport.station.
The Tourist Information Office inside the Pisa Airport terminal sells both train tickets and Pisa city bus tickets. So buy all your tickets there – no need deal with the hassle and ticket lines at Pisa Centrale railway station. (We purchased both round-trip train tickets to Florence and Pisa city bus tickets to go to the Leaning Tower at the Pisa Airport Tourist Information Office)
But taking the bus doesn’t work if you have heavy luggage.- there’s nowhere to leave your luggage at Pisa Centrale railway station.
This same Number 3 bus continues across town to the Leaning Tower, if you want to take a look at that.. (To get back from the Leaning Tower to Pisa Centrale railway station, take either city bus number 3 or number 4.)
Caution: Pisa seems to change its bus route numbers quite frequently, so if you’re going to the main railway station, be sure to ask the bus driver "
er Stazione Centrale?" (pr. "
air stat-zee-OH-nay chen-TRAH-lay"
. If want to see the Leaning Tower, ask the driver "
er Campo di Miracoli?" (pr. "
air campo dee mee-RAK-oh-lee"
Don’t forget to stamp your outbound ticket in the date-stamping machine (located inside the bus , or at the end of the platforms at train stations) at the start of your journey. (You stamp the return half of your ticket only at your destination immediately before you begin your return trip.) Any extra coupons for the same trip (such as a separate train seat reservation coupon) have to be inserted into the date-stamping machine as well.
