traveling alone
Sun, 10/03/2004 - 01:18
i will be flying alone to frankfurt germany. and i will meet some friends later on my date of arrival. but there will be sometime wehre i will be by myself? any advice to help me keep myself safe?

Im doing the same thing in Nov – eurotrip semi-alone. I have been told just do the same cautions as at home eg. dont follow strange people to strange areas, lock up your belongings etc. I think it should be fine. Also check out the city during the day to work out where dodgier areas are and stay away from them at night.
Best of luck – Europe should be a blast!
Keep reading here and you’ll find it’s not as scary as it seems while you’re sitting at home. Caution and common sense will go a long way. I’ve visited 30+ countries by myself, and I still sometimes get second thoughts the day before I leave.
The best suggestion I have (besides common sense) is to prebook your first night so you have a place to go when you get off the plane and try to choose hostels that are "social" such as having a common room and kitchen. Although you’ll probably meet plenty of people to go out with, hostels with the right amenities make it pretty easy ( sometimes too easy!) to just hang out there instead.
Also, I always suggest reading this:

Good luck, and have a great trip!
I always cary pepper spray…I know it might not be "legal" in every place I have been, but no one has ever said anything about it and the worst that would likely happen is confiscation. Anyway, I would recommend it because unfortunatly I have had to use it in my solo travels and have been VERY THANKFULL that I had it handy…..just don’t put it in your carry on. Have fun!
