Travelling Alone, hard to find drinking buddies?
Thu, 04/28/2005 - 04:35
I am heading to europe from may 19th to july 21st, and I am going to be alone. I am 21 year old guy from British columbia Canada. I am just curious from everyone’s experience how hard it is to track down people to get hammered with on a nightly basis? I am going to be staying in hostels, from what I have heard, its not hard to find friends. But, as I am travelling alone for the first time, in a strange place, I just wanted to make sure that I was going to be ok. I am a really social guy at home here, I make friends super easy, and I am a party animal. I doubt I will have any problem, but, please tell me on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard it is to meet people.

There was absolutely no trouble finding drinking buddies at all, and I went alone. Don’t worry about it if you’re a social guy.
As long as you’re not a total drunken asshole, you’ll be fine. And if you are, well, there’s plenty of other drunken assholes out there too.
1. You probably meet more people as you are les likely to chat to others in the hostel bar if theres 2 of you. my only issue was when i got my tavelling photos back and tried to explain to my family why i seemed to be with a different guy every night and couldnt remember any of their names! enjoy!
Agree with abovr.
You’ll have no problems.
You’ll find even MORE drinking buddies if you offer to buy!
You won’t have any problems. There’ll be loads of people in the same boat as you, happy to meet up with someone to go out on the town, or go sightseeing.
If the people in your hostel seem quiet, they’re probably just shy and will be happy for someone to start up a conversation.
Hostels which do not allow alcohol tend to be less social usually but you’re still likely to meet people.
If the place you’re staying is socially dead for whatever reason (like if you’re in a less travelled destination, or there at a quiet time of year), you can always just find out where the young people hang out in the town, (ask the hostel staff or anybody friendly-looking your own age), and head in that direction.
You’re likely to make some new friends this way, and it’s a change from the usual backpacker conversation which can get boring after a month or so.
It starts off like this…
"So where’ve you just come from?" and then people list off where their travels have/will take them. And then you do the same. Everyone who backpacks Europe will recognise this familiar icebreaker.
If you just want to get hammered with any old asshole, the ‘party hostels’ often attract these characters but plenty of decent people too. You’ll be surprised how many cool people you meet on the road.
Buy me 1-8 drinks and I’ll drink with you. Glenmorangie, Aberlour or Red Breast only please.
Its harder to find time to yourself than drinking buddies. You’ll make a lot of new best friends in any hostel with a bar.
Well, thank you everyone for the pointers. I wasn’t too concerned (I don’t have trouble making buddies here) I just wanted to know how difficult it was, as I haven’t been to europe before, and kinda wanted to know the shibby.
Thanks!
