Trip recap time
Sat, 08/27/2005 - 20:09
Well everyone I made it back from my Eurotrip and everything went very well. Some was exceptionaly good due to advice I recieved on here before I left. So here’s what I thought of the places I visited, the things I did, and the places I stayed.
Scotland – Stayed at St. Christophers hostel in Edinburgh. It was nice at the time but I changed my mind after I moved along to the next stop. I did the 3 day Skye high tour with Haggis and it was excellant. After 3 days I was tired of tour groups, but it was a great way to see the highlands. The only touristy thing I did was go to Edinburgh castle, but it was worth it. I found it much more interesting then Windsor castle.
Amsterdam – Stayed at the Flying Pig downtown. I didn’t stay there for the partying so I was expecting the worst, but it was actually really nice. Visited the Anne Frank house and the Heineken Brewery tour. Don’t bother going to see Anne Frank if you haven’t read the book, or it’s pointless. The brewery tour was good and the free gift at the end was nice. Also did a night canal cruise and that was really good.
Rome – Stayed at Alessandro Legends and it was very clean and small. I was supposed to be at the downtown but got moved due to renovations. Saw all the major sites: Coluseum, Palatine hill, roman forum, pantheon, spanish steps, trevi fountain (twice, once at night to see it lit up) and also all the vatican stuff. I really don’t think that it was worth the money to get into vatican museum and it also wasn’t really worth the wait. I actually liked the Basillica better and I didn’t reallly have to wait at all or pay for that. If you are going to the museum either go early morning or late morning, not at 9AM. The lines seemed to be at there longest at that time.
Florence – Stayed at Hotel Sampaoli which was a nice budget hotel. I went to the Academia and saw David. He is the only thing worth seeing and if you arn’t into art then don’t bother going at all. I made a reservation to get in so I didn’t have to wait, and i’m happy I did. Make sure you phone and make one before so you don’t have to wait. I also took a trip out to Pisa. It’s true, there is nothing else to see but the tower. But I still am happy that I got to go. I didn’t see what the fuss about Florence was. It was my least favorite place and I know I won’t be going back.
Venice – Stayed at Hotel Belvedere. So much for a budget hotel. It was by far worse then most of the hostel’s I stayed at. The only thing that I liked was it’s location, which was on the mainland. It was a quick 10 minute train into the city, so I reccomend not staying in the city as it’s way to confusing to find anything there.
Interlaken – Stayted at Alplodge/Backpackers and it was a ncie place. Interlaken was my favorite part of the trip. It’s such a nice small town. I did hiking one day up the alps and did a canyoning trip another day with Alpinraft. It was a great day and I would have done it again the next day it I hadn’t been leaving.
Munich – Stayed at Wombats and it was a great hostel. It’s so clean and right across from the train station so it’s easy to find. I did an free walking tour that was offered, and I got discount tickets at the end so I did a Dachau tour with the same people the next day. If you can get the tour cheap enough like I did, then do it. I only ended up paying a few euros more for the tour guide vs. the audio guide or no guide at all. I hate those stupid audio guides anyway. Also went to the Hofbrahaus. If your going to go to one Beer hall you may as well go to the best and biggest.
Prague – Stayed at Arpacay hostel and the boathouse. They were both good but the Boathouse was the best hostel I stayed at in all of Europe. It’s worth being a bit further out when you get all the little extras from the boathouse. I visited Prague castle and also did a walking tour offered by a history teacher staying at the boathouse while I was there. I think he was just staying for the summer so he may not be there much longer. It was a great tour though.
London – Stayed at the Globetrotter Inn. It was anice place but I woke up in the morning and my arms were covered with bedbug bites. I never expected to get them after being gone a month without any, and I never expected them in a hostel in London. Other than that it was good. It was my 2nd time in London so I saw some of the sites again, but mostly avoided the touristy things. I took a walk through Picadilly circus, and passed by Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. Then I just took a walk through Hyde Park and that was really nice.
Overall I had a great trip. My favorite places were the Scottish highlands, Rome, Interlaken, and London. As a said above, my favorite hostel was the Boathouse in Prague.
Now i’m looking forward to my next trip, but I know that won’t be happening for awhile. ![]()

Wow! You saw so much! Congrats to you and good to hear you had a nice trip!
Thanks for taking the time to share your report! Too bad you didn’t think your Vatican experience was worth the money, but I think I know what you mean. I didn’t make it into the Vatican (didn’t realize they stop letting people in around 3:30-4p), but it would have had to be pretty damn amazing to impress me more than St. Peter’s did. The cathedral is freaking spectacular.
Are you going to post photos anytime soon?
Kahunna,
I’m working on the pics right now. I’ll be sure to post a link when they are up.
Cool stuff nivid….I see no mention of a trip to "Doner Burgers" which I described to you in relations to Wombats haha….well, you can go there next time!
Haha user name,
I remembered the doner burgers and I saw them and then changed my mind. Maybe next time i’ll be more up to it.
Here’s a link to the photo’s. It’s only a start, so there will be more to come. I just put up some random pics of everywhere. Now remember i’m no photographer, so they’re nothing special, but I like them.
http://photos.yahoo….
Enjoy, and keep checking back as i’ll add more soon.
thx a lot nvid for your recap, it helps a lot
im leaving in 8 Days for my first Eurotrip, im so exited ….!
sigh I love reading about people planning and anticipating a trip and then the recap and pictures! I want to go everywhere!!! Thanks Nivid for sharing.
No problem Knic and LeoX,
I’m the same with the recaps. I love reading about and seeing pics of where everyone has gone on their travels. Makes me want to go so many more places when I see it.
Leo, I hope to read your recap of how things go when you get back and maybe see some pictures too.
Hope you have a good one.
Thanks for the recap Nivid…It’s nice of you to share the info. Your trip to the highlands sounded great…it really makes me want to go back to Scotland. I would have to disagree on the Vatican Museum thing but I’m a bit of an art freak and we all have our opinions…that’s why we’re here! Sorry to hear about your bugs…I got attacked by them in Dublin and again in Italy, they just totally suck. Have fun planning your next trip! ~Amy
hey nivid, nice recap. its fun reading about other people experiences and i visited a lot of the same places when i went a couple months ago. glad u had a great time….
Sounds like you had a great time. Your route through Europe is pretty much the same as what I did back in 2000! Good choice.
I was wondering if you’d fancy posting some of those hostel reviews to my website? It’s at http://www.travoholi…
Cheers!
Kirsty
Sure Kirsty,
I’ll post some reviews on your website. They were very helpful to me when I picked where to stay. I’ve already posted reviews on BugEurope and Hostelworld.
nivid, you rock! Which digital camera did you use? My pictures are up on my Imagestation (http://www.imagestat…), user name: Dominus_XIII
Dominus,
I used me Fuji camera. It’s the Fujifilm FinePix A330 3.2 Mega Pixels.
I’m going to go and check out your pictures now. Can’t wait to see them.
Sorry Dominus,
I coudn’t look at your pics. I think that you need a password as well as the username to get to see them. Maybe some other time.
nivid, I’m glad you’re interested and that’s quite a rocking camera you’ve got =). I’ll let you in on the access if you’d like to. Just follow-up this post and leave an e-mail address.
