Please help! My wife and I are planning a several week trip to Europe and we’re trying to decide whether to buy a Eurail pass for our entire journey or buy individual passes for the following schedule.

Sunday, Sept 20 — Amsterdam to Brussels (roundtrip) (IC)
Monday, September 21 — Amsterdam to Cologne (ICE)
Monday, September 21 — Cologne to Prague (CNL)
Thursday, September 24 — Prague to Vienna (U,EC or SC,EC)
Saturday, September 26 — Vienna to Salzburg (OEC or RJ)
Monday, September 28 — Salzburg to Munich (roundtrip) (EC or RB)
Tuesday, September 29 — Salzburg to Hallstat (roundtrip) (OIC,REX)
Wednesday, September 30 — Salzburg to Lauterbrunnen (OEC,EC,IC,R)
Saturday, October 3 — Lauterbrunnen to Lucerne (R,IC)
Monday, October 5 — Lucerne to Zurich (IR)

I was trying to crunch the numbers, but I was having a hard time finding the prices for the individual tickets. Does anyone know of any good sites that have fares for these types of routes?

Thanks!
Kevin

I am leaving from LAX with $3000 for 16 days
Amsterdam, Bruges, Brussels, Frankfurt, Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Baden-Baden, Zürich

Well, if you bought a Eurail pass for this, it would be a 5 country pass (switzerland, benelux, germany, czech and austria) for 10 days, which is 365 euros or 499 dollars (for youth— for adult it is $775/564 euros). So divide the 10 days into $499 and it’s about $50 per day.
Now, go to the websites of the different rail companies:
Germany— http://www.bahn.de/i…
Belgium— www.b-rail.be/main/E
Austria— www.oebb.at/en
Switzerland— www.sbb.ch/en
(You don’t need the Dutch or Czech sites because those trips are only to and from one of these other countries.)

These websites are fairly easy to use, and the links I’ve given are the english versions of the websites. Just type in the to and from in the slots provided, pick the date, and it should turn up ticket prices (you may not be able to do the exact dates here because they don’t usually have tickets available that far in advance but pick the same day of the week and it should be the same price). If the rides are significantly less than $50/day then they are not worth a day on this particular railpass.

You may also be able to mix a railpass with point-to-point tickets as well. Figure out what works for you using this method.

Try www.railsaver.com That will give you as good a recommendation as anything. I’d look at a 4 country pass and point to point in Chez Rep.
