I wrote quite a bit not long ago –

I went in 2002 and I really liked it, took a ferry from Sicily. They filmed a bunch of star war movies in Matmata. I also went to Douz to do some camel trekking. There is also a town near Tunis that looks like parts of Greece, Sidi Bou Said. I would recommend it but if your doing the 2 month thing its hard to do Tunisia without burning out a little.
I will be going in for 2-3 days only and I am hoping to extend my stay for an additional couple of days to do some sightseeing.
Is there anything in Tunis to see or nearby areas.

Keleti, Thanks for the nice reading,
How long did you stay each time in Tunisia? Is it safe? How about cleanliness? expensive? hotels?
I know you have 10 year old information and things might have changed quite a bit so I am not holding you to it, however any feedback is well appreciated.

Reading some backdated messages, I noticed a link of pictures sent by sailor. The link does not seem to work.
Is there anyway, you could post the link again.

If you are staying in Tunis you have access to the TGM – a light rail transit that runs into the suburbs. It can take you to Carthage (worth a visit) you’ll want to probably get out at Dermech or Hannibal station, Sidi Bou Said (touristy but nice) and to beaches like Marsa (which is at the end of the line I believe). I didn’t spend much time in Tunis myself, but I did go to the museum and the souk (quite large). I was there for about 7 weeks each time. I lived in Carthage both times, as an archeaological student and when I did travel, it was on the cheap. Like anywhere, you get what you pay for! There are some really nice hotels. Do you know French?? Learn how to ask “may I see the room first”. I felt safe in Tunisia. I never traveled alone, but I did do two weekend trips with only one other woman.
I would recommend if you are only there for a few days that you set yourself up in Tunis. Spend at least a day visiting places in Tunis. Then make a day trip or two on the TGM. Sidi Bou is a nice contrast to Tunis (or was when I was there).
I am back to my plans for Tunisia again. Will be leaving for paris on the 12th and then to Tunis on the 15th.
Any other comments on the food, place, weather, etc.
