Twin pass validation
Wed, 04/20/2005 - 16:24
I will be travelling to Germany next month one week for work one week for play .I was planning on purchasing a germany only twin pass but I would like to be able to use it the first week I arrive (before my friend arrives).
Correct me if I am wrong but do both people have to be there when the pass is first validated?
Is there anyway around this if this is true?
Also is it two individual passes or one?
Thanks for your help .You guys are full of great info.

I don’t have definitive answers to your questions, but here’s some suggestions, experience and information.
1. Be sure to list your name first when buying the pass — that may work better when trying to use it alone.
2. While I think that technically you need to have everybody and their passport lined up when you get a railpass validated, I’ve never had a situation where that actually happened. They just asked to see my passport and validated the pass.
3. With the eurail saver pass, you get one pass. I think the names and passport numbers are actually listed on a "control voucher" that is attached. I assume it’s the same (just 1 pass) with the German Twin pass. Britrail was separate passes. Weirdly, one just had my name on it. The other two each listed another name and said "valid only with" my pass — so I could use my pass alone, or with one of the others, or with both of the others, but neither of the others could travel without me.
4. I once asked the "what does traveling together really mean" question about eurail passes on one of the railpass sites. The answer was that one person could use the pass alone — but that the other would have no pass to use for that day.
You might try the "contact us" e-mail at whatever railpass website you’re using. I’ve had good luck getting answers at railpass.com/new
Thanks for the quick response . I sent off an e-mail to railpass yesterday .Judging from your post it sounds like I have a pretty good chance of making this work for me .
Has anyone else had experince with validating with only one person present ?
Chad:
Just found this at ricksteves.com
Looks like validation may be an issue, but I’d still think worth a try if you wouldn’t be wasting too much money.
Thanks for the info . I am still a little unsure what to do .I sent an e-mail to railpass last week and never received any reply .I was really hoping to hear from some other travelers who had validated with only one person present before I bought a 9 day pass .
Thanks again
