My family has been hosting an exchange student from Mariupol Ukraine this school year.
We have received her return itinerary; however it does not tell us many details about assistance provided by the exchange program for returning students. It includes a train journey from Kiev to Mariupol. She will have probably 3 large suitcases and is traveling alone. My questions, 1 Will the Ukraine train system allow her to transport this much luggage, even if it is at an additional cost? 2 Will there be an assistant available to help her with her luggage when she boards the train and at any transfers along the way? 3 Does anyone know of a website that would have information about the Ukraine train system?
Thank you so much.

Sorry I can’t be more definite….

Probably

Probably not, although several people offered to help me with a bag. However, there is a direct train on this route on some days — I think every day after May 29. I would definitely recommend that one. Use the German rail site for schedules. The city names are usually the transliteration of the Russian name/spelling as opposed to the Ukrainian on this site. http://reiseauskunft…

I will try to see what else I can find. www.uz.gov.ua has schedules in Ukrainian — perhaps there’s other information there. I found that and other info about the Ukrainian rail system here in an on-line preview of The Bradt Guide to Ukraine. www.poezda.net also has train schedules (also using the odd spelling/transliteration of city names that the German rail site uses) according to Language and Travel Guide to Ukraine (which I highly recommend you buy when you go to Ukraine to visit your student).

Thank you oldlady, you are a great help as always.
I will show our student the links you provided. I can’t read Ukrainian/Russian but she can, so hopefully it will answer some questions for us.
