I’ve been around Europe before and I’m going to do it again. I’ve seen all the ‘classics’ (Eifel tower, Vatican City, Tower of London, blah blah) but I want to get a list of really really strange things to see in Europe. I want to eventually make a web page with all the adventures and experiences in seeing these.
Here’s a few good examples. There’s a guy from Iran who had his immigration papers stolen in Paris, tried to fly to London. London wouldn’t let him in because he had no papers and sent him back to Paris. The Paris officials wouldn’t let him leave the airport because he’s got no papers and no other country will accept him. So, this guy has been STUCK at the Paris Charles de Gualle airport since 1988. His name is Nasseri and I plan on going to the airport, hunting him down, meeting him and taking some pictures. (You can find more info about this guy athttp://www.straightdope.com/columns/990820.html)
I want OTHER bizzare things to see in Europe. Strange customs people have – There are some small villages in the N. of France where people traditionaly build their houses in holes in the side of hills. AKA the Hobbit Holes of JRR Tolkein.
I can’t seem to find information on this on the web – But I need more ideas. Things that are odd/strange and aren’t standard tourist attractions…
Even strange festivals. In Sonkajarvi, Finland there are the ‘Wife Carrying World Championships’. Men take their wives (or other people’s wives) and carry them 250m obstacle course. The fastest man wins his wife’s weight in beer. (More info at http://www.sonkajarvi.fi:1997/kunta/eukonkanto/english/)
I’ve got a digital camera and a few months to travel. I want to make a travelogue/webpage detailing all the things I managed to find.
I KNOW you people must know more of these.. Either seen them, or heard of them… Rumours, tales from other travellers or hard facts.. that’s what I want… Even if I have to go all the way there to find out that it really doesn’t exist that’s fine… It’s all part of the adventure, right?
