I’ll be in NYC from July 15-25. Anyone know of any popular destinations that are nearby? I need to start and end in NYC. I was thinking of visiting Boston, Hanover (NH), Niagra Falls and maybe Halifax, Canada if its not too expensive. I’ll be taking the greyhound. Also, are there any national parks or famous scenery in the area?

I can’t really reply much on the US Northeast coast, as it’s been at least 10 years since i’ve been there. Niagra Falls is really a nice place to go. However, if you come to Canada, try to take the high speed ferry to Yarmouth
www.catferry.com.

I think that it departs from Bar Harbour, ME. I think that there might be another ferry (a slow one)that comes from Portland, but i’m not sure. This will save you a lot of time instead of taking the bus all the way around through New Brunswick. But if you go to NB, you would be able to stop at Fundy National Park http://www.pc.gc.ca/…
as well as the Hopewell Rocks where you can walk on the ocean floor.

There is lots of stuff to do in Halifax, which is where I live. There is also lots to see along the southern coast of Nova Scotia. If you make it up this way, be sure to make a trip out to Peggy’s Cove. I think that it’s less that an hour from Halifax. http://peggys-cove.c…

Have a great trip!

A bus ride through Maine and into Canada might be a good idea after Niagara Falls if you can work it. The scenery in Maine is wonderful and some of the spots to stop for Seafood dinner are to die for. Although it may take longer than the ferry, I would go through NB before reaching Nova Scotia if time permits. Halifax and generally the whole province is beautiful with lots of sights to see and some of the friendliest people you will ever meet anywhere. I hope you enjoy it because I know I did, although we drove it I would do it by bus if that was my only option. Nivid is bang on with this one, The Hopewell Rocks are a must see as well, just check the tide times when you are there and make sure you make time at low tide to visit there.

Honestly, you’ll probably find yourself wanting to spend much of those 10 days simply exploring NYC. There are so many amazing museums, neighborhoods, history, etc. that you’ll never be bored.

That said, if you want to get out of the city, Niagara Falls is a good option for maybe three days (including transportation time). Philadelphia is only a two-hour (I think) train ride away.

Enjoy!

I agree, NYC could easily fill up that amount of time. Outside of the city however, Boston is a really cool place to go…a lot to see and eat, and a really beautiful city. I think it was a 3-4hr train trip from NYC. Also, if you’re interested in heading south, Washington DC is worth a visit as well, 3-4hrs by train, probably longer by bus. So much history and interesting museums in both places. Have fun!

You’re probably better off sticking to NYC, Boston (maybe go out to Cape Cod or Nantucket too) and possibly Philly or Baltimore/DC. Ten days isn’t all that much, and Niagara Falls is a good 7 hour drive (and train ride) from NYC.
