Venice To Athens?
Wed, 12/15/2004 - 19:12
Is it easier to reach Athens from Rome or from Venice?
I see there are a lot more flights from Venice to Athens..than from Rome. ( I have tried aegeanair, alitalia, olympic air. It always comes up as unable to find flights. Alitalia had one for 92Euros this is for April 20. Is this expensive?
Also to get a Ferry, I need to goto Bari or Brindisi from Rome first.
And it takes a lot of time as well. So was considering air.
Or does Venice provide easier Access?

Until a few weeks ago there existed an Italian budget airline flying from Venice to Athens (www.volareweb.com).
Don’t know if some other budget airline will take over their routes till summer.
Are you just visiting Italy + Greece?
The prices for budget flights in Europe have not much to do with the distance you will fly. More with demand and competition.
In most cases it will be cheaper to fly with a budget airline via the UK or Germany, than to fly directly between two Med countries.
Maybe you can adjust your itinerary accordingly.

London is a great hub for budget airlines. But take care that the in and out flight are from the same airport. A transfer would be time consuming, as the airports are all fairly out of the city, and transfer is also really expensive. Like the city itself.
In Germany the Cologne/Bonn airport (CGN) is the biggest hub for budget airlines. Nice as you’re in 15 minutes by S-Bahn train at the main railway station (EUR 2,00) and the most important sight, the cathedral, is next to the station (edge to edge). Or have some Kölsch (beer) in a pub in the old town.

Also close is the Düsseldorf Airport (DUS). 1 hour (EUR 8,70) from Cologne Airport by regional train (direct ICE needs only 46 minutes but is EUR 18,40).
In 1:15 your are also by ICE at Frankfurt Airport. Not really close, but fast trains (300 kph) and due this also not cheap (EUR 48-50).
