Venice to Florence
Mon, 04/26/2010 - 21:45
I’m planning to travel by train from Venice to Florence on July 19. I don’t necessarily plan to book this far in advance, but I wanted to get a sense of how frequently the train runs and how much it costs. When I searched on the Trenitalia website, however, the only train I found was at 3 in the morning. After being briefly very confused, I came to the conclusion that there will probably be more trains that just aren’t available for online booking yet. Is that correct? I won’t have a rail pass, so I’m looking for the cheapest point-to-point ticket.
Thanks!

Yea, I just did a couple of random dates in May and got more trains to come up. I wouldn’t plan on booking online in advance though, if you’re using an American credit card. I wasn’t able to buy from the Italian train website with my card last year, and several people recently have noted they were also unable to do so with an American card. I’d just plan on getting tickets in Italy; point-to-point tickets are much cheaper in Italy than other places anyways. A regional train for this route is still only about 3 hours and will be cheaper than the faster eurostar trains (still pretty inexpensive, IMO and compared to other countries).

The train runs about once an hour. i.e., 8:50, 9:50; 10:50…
I usually stop in the train station about a day early, when I am in the neighborhood, and buy tickets. I’ve not found any that have been sold out.

I agree with clevelandbrown. It’s fast and easy to buy tickets from the automated kiosk at the train station and about a day in advance is usually plenty of time.
Thanks for the help! I will get my ticket when I get to Venice.
