Venice to Switzerland
Mon, 04/26/2010 - 16:29
Hi anybody ever taken a trip from Venice to Switzerland (probably Zurich!) by train? I am thinking of doing this once I leave Venice in mid-May and wondered if it was a nice way to travel, I’d imagine you’d maybe go through the alps and I believe it can take 7 hours or so?
I am leaving from Liverpool with $10000 for 89 days
Rome, Florence, Venice, Vienna, Salzburg, Zürich, Berne, Lyon, Nice, Toulouse, Madrid, Porto, Lisbon, Seville, Granada, Valencia, Barcelona, Paris, Bruges, Brussels, Munich, Prague, Berlin, Hamburg, Amsterdam

Most trains to Switzerland from Venice require a connection in Milan. Use the German national rail company website for schedules anywhere in Europe. http://reiseauskunft… It’s scenic from Milan to Switzerland and would be a pleasant ride, although 7 1/2 hours on the train is not my idea of a fun way to spend the day.
Your itinerary of Venice to Vienna works out very well for an overnight train as there’s a direct one. It doesn’t work out as well during the day as it requires a connection and the fastest options include one leg by bus.
I think your options are train or plane. I’d rather spend more hours on a train and see some scenery, than less hours in a cramped plane and see only clouds. I don’t think train food is much better than plane food, so we usually bring our food and drink and eat on the train, which is fairly common practice.
Any route over the alps will be scenic. The best, in my opinion, is Rome to Lugano, Lugano to Tirano (by bus, ticket sold at the Lugano train station), and Tirano to Chur to Zurich. Tirano to Chur is the Bernina express route and you won’t find a more scenic ride. Alas, this is a much longer trip so you should overnight in Lugano, and possibly again in Chur.
Madrid, Toledo
Dublin, Dingle, Dublin
Bruges, Ardennes, Bastogne, Brussels
London
Charleville-Mézières, Reims
Thanks for the advice, I was originally considered Venice to Vienna but think it may be a bit out of the way and my itinerary may work better if I do Austria after Munich and then head up to Prague. I will look into it!

I think by train is the best.. I Don’t see any cheap flights
