A letter in the October 2003 issue of "Today’s Railways" provided some interesting reading.

Apparently many tickets issued outside some European countries and outside Europe, do NOT have all of the details repeated on ALL of the coupons.

Apparently it is difficult to explain the situation exactly, but a reasonably simple instruction is- if travelling on European sector tickets rather than a railpass, you MUST retain all of the coupons until you have finished ALL of your journeys.
