I was planning a trip from Greece to Tirana-Podgorica-Dubrovnik-Sarajevo-Belgrade-Skopje and back to Tirana. But I have read that the public transportation in these
countries is not so easy to find. I was trying to rent a car from big companies like
Hertz, Europcar and Sixt but they do not let you travel abroad….Any advice on this type of companies or other mean of transportation would be very helpful !!!

I am traveling for 7 days
Tirana, Podgorica, Dubrovnik, Split, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Skopje, Tirana

1. Renting a car to take into numerous Balkan countries will be expensive — particularly if you rent in one and drop off in another. We rented a car in Slovenia. Taking it into Croatia and dropping it off in Zagreb more than doubled the price, so we took the train from Ljubljana to Zagreb. If your trip is more than 3 weeks, leasing may be an option. Check some of the old posts about driving and rental cars for links and options.
2. Check Air Croatia. Sometimes they have cheap flights in the area. Some of their flights honor the $99 flight pass available on www.europebyair.com if you can’t find it cheaper. Use www.whichbudget.com to see which low fare airlines fly which routes and check our “cheap flights” forum for more links, tips and help.
3. Public Transportation is as easy to “find” as anywhere else. You can get around the area by bus (try www.eurolines.com for starters) and you can get around a fair percentage of it by train. Use http://reiseauskunft… for train schedules anywhere in Europe. Train service is “good” in terms of decent equipment, helpful staff, etc. Trains aren’t as fast or as frequent as Western Europe and times/distances are often surprisingly long compared to the jaunts between major cities in. Western Europe
4. Ferry is an option between Split and Dubrovnik but bus is probably slightly faster.

You aren’t really planning this in 7 days, are you? I doubt it’s even logistically possible to get to all these places. It’s certainly not possible to ever get off trains, buses, ferries or out of your rental cars.

Tirana-Podgorica BUS
Podgorica-Dubrovnik BUS
Dubrovnik-Sarajevo BUS
Sarajevo-Belgrade BUS (check the terminal in Lukavica, more buses to Serbia than from Sarajevo main station) or TRAIN¨
Belgrade-Skopje TRAIN
Skopje-Tirana BUS

The buses have no online timetable. Go to the bus station in each city and try to find out the departure and price.

If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.
If you only want to search train or bus connection within Czech&Slovakia and/or to neighboring countries, use www.cp.sk or www.idos.cz search engines. For domestic transport, they also show prices.
