What is the best German beer?
Wed, 08/03/2005 - 05:55
Boys & Girls,
I have recently relocated to Germany from Australia, so i have been spending too much research on this topic in preparation for Oktoberfest.
To be honest, the wheat (weizen) beers are on the money at the moment. Franzikaner (?), Paulaner (?), Lowenbrau (?), Schneider-Weisse is my pick!
Your thoughts
Grin
A good, German Weiz-bier is always refreshing, especially with a floating lemon slice..
It all depends on what I am in the mood for. You cannot go wrong with Augustiner, Paulaner, or Hacker-Pschorr (Heles) biers… Sometimes though, I might be in the mood for a darker bier, and Paulaner makes a couple of really good heavier (7.5% or more) brau’s…

Call me crazy but I still prefer the good ole Spaten wiesenhelles.
But maybe its just because I grew up in the states drinking US Spaten Premium.
Not a big fan of wheat beers myself, but some of my favorite German beers are Augustiner and Weihenstephaner. I’ll have to go through my stein/glass collection to get the exact name, but a delicious beer I had many times up in Bremen was Haake-Beck Kreuzen(sp?).
Unlike Chris, who is mostly always in the mood for Weis-biers… I like the Lager & Helles biers more & more these days… Another Eutrotropper that I have partied with a few times in Munchen (and USA) – TAS, also loves to drink the wheat beers much of the time. I have to be in the "mood" for a HefeWeisen… That may be because all we drank (7 days a week, for two years straight) in Stuttgart in 1985 & 86 was Weisen bier and/or Stuttgarter Hofbrau… I suppose that recent return trips to Munchen, and a much older set of taste buds, has me trying other stuff. Also, I am sometimes in the mood for a darker, or BOCK bier, with a higher alc. content, etc… Belgian biers fit this category like a glove!!!

I had tasted one of those Belgien beers years back in Chareroi and it does have a kick.
We can simplify this entire discussion by quoting the famous Homer Simpson…..
"Hmmmmmm,, beeerr!"

Only 7 days till I am there! Here is the official Bier zelten price guide for 2005, along with comparison to the 2004 prices…. Most just went up about 15 to 20 cents (2 pct.)…
Festzelt Preis pro Maß 2005 / Preis pro Maß 2004
Augustinerbräu 7,10 Euro / 6,95 Euro 2,2%
Fischer Vroni 7,10 Euro / 6,95 Euro 2,2%
Hofbräu-Festzelt 7,10 Euro / 6,95 Euro 2,2%
Paulaner-Festhalle 7,10 Euro / 6,95 Euro 2,2%
Pschorrbräu Bräurosl 7,15 Euro / 6,95 Euro 2,9%
Armbrust-Schützen-Festhalle 7,20 / Euro 7 Euro 2,9%
Schützen-Festhalle 7,20 Euro 7,05 / Euro 2,1%
Hackerbräu 7,10 Euro / 7,10 Euro 0%
Käferschänke 7,10 Euro / 7,10 Euro 0%
Löwenbräu 7,25 Euro / 7,10 Euro 2,1%
Schottenhamel 7,25 Euro / 7,10 Euro 2,1%
Spatenbräu Ochsenbraterei 7,10 Euro / 7,10 Euro 0%
I think they should have made it exactly 7.00 EUR per mas – across the board. However, making most prices .10 to .20 over and even Euro should ensure higher tips in the long run for the hard-working girls.. They won’t mind cashing-in all that change at the end!

every year they say this and every year it is still 6.50€
I think we have been going about this all wrong! The one true answer to the question "What is the best German Bier?" is simple:
The one that is in your hand!

If you cannot find me, call me… Apparently, you do not need the city code (89) for Munchen within Europe…

Augustiner Weissbier or the Weismainer Puels-Braeu
I’ll be getting on a jet plane in approx. 7.5 hours! Of course, I will have three hours to burn in Philly (PHL) airport, then on to Munchen!

Give me a call when you touchdown on the motherland… just so we can test our phones.
