Myself and best friend are planning a trip to Europe early May 05, we plan on seeing as many places as possible so the country, city we fly into doesn’t really matter. We have looked only at flights to London LGW. Where do you suggest would be the cheapest and most effective place to arrive to?

Depends on your itinerary and departure city. If your on the E. coast you’ll find cheap flights into many places but Searching out of MN I normally get lowest fares to Lon & Ams. Lon is a very good chioce if you are planning to visit the place on your trip because there are plenty of cheap flights from London area airports. (check out the prices on Easyjet.con & ryanair.com for ex.) It’s a good choice.

London is usually the cheapest followed by paris but remember when your figuring in costs that you will have to add on some transport from london if you want to goto a contiental destnation…

London, Paris and Amsterdam are usually cheapest, but you might find something cheap to Frankfurt. Since you’re going "everywhere" look into a open jaw. I found a relatively cheap into Frankfurt out of Rome for this fall.

Read through the "cheap flights" forum for lots and lots of tips and an idea of the prices you should be looking for.

I guess it depends on where you are flying out of. I would personally fly into Amsterdam. I was seeing airfare from $491 a couple months ago. It also depends on what time of year you are looking. Check out www.mobissimo.com

I asked a travel agent this exact same question once and she told me London, Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt. According to her cities in the south (Italy, Spain) tend to be more expensive, though I can’t remember the reason she gave. Having flown into a number of cities, Roundtrips to London and Paris were by far the cheapest. My open jaw into Amsterdam and out of Paris was reasonable. My far the most expensive was into Madrid and out of Lisbon. I paid through the nose, but don’t regret a penny.

Other things being equal, I prefer Amsterdam because transfers are so easy. Charles de Gaul, Frakfurt, and Heathrow are hard to navigate and you have to change terminals quite often. Long delays at immigration in the summer, make short transfers difficult in these 3, but not AMS.

Lufthansa flies from a dozen or so US cities to Frankfurt, Germany and has countless flights to other places in Europe from there. It is also centrally located on the continent.
