what to do with an afternoon in brussels
Sun, 05/10/2009 - 18:57
I decided to go to Brussels, Belgium for an afternoon trip out of Paris. I was wondering if anyone with Brussels experience had any must see places to see in the central area, or good restaurant or pub ideas. Looking to just see a few sites, grab a good dinner, and enjoy some Begium beer.
I am leaving from Charlotte, NC with $1500 for 15 days

From Central train station, it’s an easy walk to Grand Place for a view of the medieval guild halls. There are several good restaurants on Rue de Bouchers nearby, among them _Aux Armes de Bruxelles, Le Marmiton and Chez Leon _ although all will be expensive. There are numerous cafes and bistros in the area where you can get a great beer and a cheaper meal (or just get a Belgian waffle from one of the tiny shops).
Try the Mannekin Pis and its female counterpart (which is in a alley not far from Grand Place).
There is the Kathedral not far from the central station that is worth a peek. And its not too far to get to the Palace of Justice.
There is a car park not far from the grand place where you can go up to the 10th floor and get a good view of brussels. Which is free.
Definitely just grab a cheap belgian waffle or I found a heart attack inducing meal that had a kind of hot dog meat in a baguette topped with fries and sauce. Delicious.

I think your best bet is to head for the Grand Place (one of the most beautiful in Europe). From here you can experience the best of belgium in one afternoon. Maybe start with a vist to Wittamer Chocolatier which is the official chocolate supplier of the Belgian Court…the best best choclates in the world (located on the Grand Place), go to any of the great open air cafes around the square for a cherry beer. I geuss you should probably check out manneking Piss (just a statue of a kid peeing, but it is the symbol of the City)…right next to the state is Poechenellekelder, which is a traditional bar with like 2000 different beers on the menu. For lunch I would go back to the Grand place for a meal of Moules and frites.
