What to do in Frankfurt for 8-10 hours?
Wed, 08/25/2004 - 17:15
I have a trip to Portugal planned and have a layover in Frankfurt from 7:10AM to 10:00PM. Any suggestions on what my wife, son, and I should do during this time would be appreciated.

You could take them to the red light district. Not too much in Frankfurt.
There might be time to take a trip to Mainz, where you can visit the Dom and the Gutenberg museum.
Take the U-Bahn from the airport to the Romerberg (Old Town Square), which has been rebuilt to look like it did before WWII. Close to there is the Goethe House and Museum, small but worth a look. You can take a walk along the River Main, or go up to the top of the Commerzbank Building, which I’m told is the tallest building in mainland Europe.
Although it’s no Berlin or Munich, Frankfurt nevertheless is not as drab as many Eurotrippers make it out to be.
I second the suggestion that you head for Mainz. It’s about 20 minutes on the S-Bahn. The Romanesque Dom is very good, but the nearby pedestrians-only zone, public squares (Marktplatz), outdoor cafes, and shopping centers are great too. On the south side of the Dom is the old cobblestoned, pre-war old town area (head down Augustinerstrasse and you’ll be in the middle of it) with shops, cafes, wine bars, etc. A bit further south – just south of the Mainz Sud (not the main or "Hbf"
train station – is a great little park called the Stadtpark, with manicured gardens, an aviary and reptile house, a view of the Rhine, and a nice outdoor biergarten at the adjacent Favorite Parkhotel.
It’s easiest to walk to all this stuff from the Mainz Sud station (the first stop after crossing the Rhine) so get off there and have a map with you so you can find your way around. The station has lockers. Get a roundtrip ticket at the Frankfurt Airport from one of the RMV machines. Regular fare is about 3.50 each way, but there should also be a discounted ticket available for families or small groups.
Tons of brothels in frankfurt, check ‘em out.
Thanks, HomeSkillet and Russ, I’ll have to give that a look.
No red light district for me….happily married!
Back in the day I had some time to kill there. I went to the zoo and discovered that they feed their big cats during regular visitor hours. It was pretty amazing watching the tigers and lions pacing in eager anticipation of their big chunk of meat. Haven’t seen that at any other zoo. We are talking about what looked like 10 pound chunks. Those cats chowed down!
Quite tired at the moment so not yet in the mood to pontificate on the zillions of reasons why Frankfurt is hot. Much maligned for no earthly good reason, i’ll save that spiel for another day. !0 hours or 10 months, whatever your into Frankfurt will not dissapoint…check out some of the links and have a good time..
