What do I pack? Veterens, please help...
Sun, 01/08/2006 - 16:20
I’m going to be backpacking from June 1-August 1. Heres what I think I should bring: 3 shirts, 2 skirts, 1 jeans, 1 pair flipflops, 1 pair heels, 1 pair (comfortable walking shoes), shampoo, soap, towel, blankie… What else is needed?
There are lots of old threads on this topic. Try and do a search for some old ones.
Heres one to get you started.

I can’t tell you what to pack because I find most women pack things I would leave at home, I guess I don’t give importance to some things.
Here’s a couple of tips though:
1) You can survive 1 month with the same amount of stuff you would pack for a 1 week trip.
2) If you can’t carry it, you don’t need it.
3) Don’t take things you might need ("just in case"
. The only 2 exceptions to this rule are kotex and imodium, they are small, and when you need them, you need them immediately.
BTW, you’re taking to many shoes.
This was about what I brought for 7 weeks, but no matter the time difference it should be about the same amount of stuff:
1 tanktop
2 tshirts
1 very light longsleeve button up
1 sarong
1 small skirt
1 pair flipflops
1 pair walking shoes
1 pair convertible pants (I Honestly would have preferred to just ditch these and have jeans or cargo pants and a seperate pair of shortsno matter what anyone else says)
1 pair pj shorts
1 light raincoat
1 zip-up sweatshirt
socks and underwear for ~4-5days
book to read, pens
journal
disposable cameras
also remember things like pills you need, contacts, glasses.
I STRONGLY reccomend having a 3-4inch pocket knife, a wine key, and a small tupperware container. I don’t know how you are travelling, but we often ate out of markets thus the bread and cheese was not presliced and being able to open a bottle of wine is necessary! The tupperware was handy for carrying food around with us… food on trains is expensive!
I would also say ditch a pair of shoes, probably the heels. First off cobblestone + heels = bad. Also, how many places do you plan on going that are that fancy? One or two? Not worth it.
Skip the blanket also. I carried a sleeping back with me for a while and I just ended up mailing it back. All the hostels provided blankets or sheets at least, and it’s plenty warm in the summer just about everywhere.
yes i agree …too many shoes…u always think ull change into heels but its never the case…besides u really have to incorporate a bit of sightseeing no matter the time or place..if u have uncomfortable heels u may just wanna catch a cab and miss out
carry the diarrhoea and gas pills / headache tablets etc in a bum bag…its such a drag but travelling will upset ur stomach from time to time and its not the food or water always…
a small antiseptic handwash is good too…to disinfect the knife u might use to cut whatever…wipes are great too
sarongs are great so u dont need a beach towel… i did buy one of those tiny towels.didnt use it much but will keep it for the next trip
a torch is good..saves u getting up to switch off lights if u dont have a bedside light
thongs ) flip flops are very acceptable..get ones with the thickest sole u can and u can almost hike the world over in them! t least in cities
travel pillow is a good idea,,have a snooze on the beach if u have to
ziplock bags are good too..helps keep ur smalls together in ur back pack but then again u can get over organised over categorised and not make use of every inch of space
my toiletry bag is the worst thing…so heavy and those little travel bottles are a pain to use..esp at the end
dont know about taking fiction books…seems a waste to read rather than look..but i do recommend a diary
take note of all photos taken and be sure to leave clues as to what ur have taken ..what a pain it is later if ur trying to annotate them and ur just guessing the general region …well it bugs me anyway lol
good luck on ur travels…
