What to do in LHR?
Wed, 05/11/2005 - 12:43
In a feew weeks I’ll be flying from ORD to FRA with a connection in London Heathrow. I’m arriving into Terminal 3 at 5:55am and leaving from Terminal 2 at 9:05am. So I’m gonna be there for 3 freaking hours! It’s not likely that after spending 8 hours on a plane I’ll be capable of reading or working. I’m wondering how can I keep myself busy to save my brain from going crazy and my wallet from going empty. Any suggestions?
Also, there is an earlier 7:05am LHR-FRA flight on the same carrier (Lufthansa). I won’t be checking any luggage, so I’m curious if they would let me go on that flight on space-available basis, as they do on domestic US flights. The only answer from Lufthansa call center was that it’s "up to the airport staff." Does anyone have any experience of this kind?

Definitely try to get on the earlier flight. If there are seats available and no luggage issues involved, the airline will usually put you on the earlier flight. They have a chance (however remote) of re-selling your seat on the later flight, but no chance to sell an empty seat on the earlier flight once it’s in the air.
All in all, 3 hours isn’t all that long at LHR — I think the minimum for international connections there is now 1 1/2 or 2 hours.
