So when you book a hostel on line (in advance) do you pay a deposit and then the rest on arrival? If so, what is the standard deposit percentage?

Generally you pay a deposit on-line and the rest on arrival, but some websites and some hostels require full payment in advance.

This site (bookings tab or from the home page) requires 10%, charged to credit card at time of booking and the rest upon arrival. The info about the specific hostel tells whether it will accept credit cards for the remaining 90% — some hostels only accept cash in local currency.

Anything paid in advance is usually not refundable so read the fine print on any booking site you use.

Other sites offer “cancellation insurance” for a fee (usually 1-2 $) in the event you are concerned that you may not stay the night.
